Rafael Nadal: A Champion in Victory and a Champion in Loss

Rafael Nadal redefined the meaning of the word "humility" yesterday.

With a stoic maturity that is seldom displayed by many, this 22 year old's grace and "life moves on" attitude after the worst defeat he has ever suffered in clay, has opened another chapter about his down-to-earth aura.

Writing this feels weird because as a Federer fan, I am supposed to be jumping up and down with ecstasy, finding faults and double entendres, mocking him for his saintly demeanour in his press conference in addition to speculating that his composure was a facade to divert his inner feelings from the world.

But, I can't do it...for if I were to do it, I would be the worst possible sadist alive on the planet.

It's not that I didn't want him to lose...yes I did, but not to some obscure Swede who, after defeating Rafa, maintains that Bjorn Borg should SMS him as if he has conquered Mount Everest.

I wanted Rafa to be there in the finals against Federer, wanted to see them clash and mark their rivalry with a new bookmark, and hoped that it would be in Federer's favour this time.

Not to gloat, but to see them fight until the finish, (last year's debacle still rankles) to see them lock horns, at any surface, any match, and any tournament—it is a treat for the eyes and nothing would have compared to the emotion of Federer gaining the trophy from Rafa Nadal.

A full completion of a circle!

And though his defeat put aside all such dreams and hopes, there was a contentment that I rooted for Rafa until the end yesterday, and it was doubly satisfying when I read his presser at the official RG site.

As a fan, I am a bad loser almost reaching to the point of "sour grapes," but after reading this guy's feedback, it feels like I should be hiding in some remote corner of the world dropping my head in abject shame.

Losing is one thing, but to come out and talk as if it's no big deal, giving credit to a man who is bragging about his greatness at the other end...that is a monumental effort and demands a stand-up ovation.

Being touted as the favourite, attempting to create a record for yourself, and to see it getting washed away in this manner and then accepting it: Yes, I did make a mistake, and I hope to learn from it in the days to come.

It's not easy and many cannot carry it off with the surety that Rafa did.

Rafa's blatant acceptance of the reality, perhaps far more earlier than when his fans and friends did, reflects his balance and greatness as a professional.

As a part of the whole, it takes a lot of different men and women to comprise the world of tennis, and it's really worthwhile that Rafael Nadal forms a larger than life part of it:

Rafael Nadal...Keeping Defeat in Perspective and Pulling for Roger

See that picture of Nadal? As a favor to his fans, I reached back to Madrid to grab a photo when he wasn't wearing the now cursed pink shirt. People always say "if I were a betting man", I'd do this or that. Well, I AM a betting man and my money is on superstitious Rafa NEVER wearing the pink again.

I just got a chance to listen to Rafa’s post-game comments with the Spanish Q & A translated into English. He made no excuses and was classy about it. He tried to downplay it but we all know how significant this was to him.

What really stood out for me was the fact that he was as laid back about it as he was. Perhaps Uncle Tony had slipped him a tranquilizer. Perhaps he had a stiff drink before going to the presser. Whatever the case, he didn’t act like the world was over or that anything all that significant had happened.

I know the Spaniards pride themselves on putting on a brave face and not showing weakness. But he really did eerily seem almost like he was a bit relieved. It’s like he knew it had to happen at some point and the weight has been lifted.

It’s just too bad that it was to a guy that Rafa didn’t like. It would be easier for him, his fans, and the tennis world to take if it was to someone that Rafa could take some solace in losing to. In other words, when one loses, it always relieves the sting a bit if the person that was helped by your loss is someone for whom you want to see helped. Verdasco comes to mind.

I think if Rafa knew ahead of time that he was going to lose to someone on his side of the bracket and he could choose the guy, it would have been Verdasco. And the very last guy would have been Soderling. It’s too bad how fate works sometimes.

I think he will change his schedule next year. And I don’t think he will play quite as much. There are things to be learned here. And privately, he’ll consider those things with his inner circle and go forward. But he was having no part of letting the media put forth excuses such as too much playing in such a short time. I must say that I admire that.

And something else I admire is what he said about hoping Roger wins. Of course he said the expected part about wanting a Spaniard to win but he named Roger by name. If Roger wins, he becomes a calendar slam winner and ties Pete Sampras. But because Pete couldn’t win the French (and he didn’t even have to play the likes of Rafa), Roger will become known as the Greatest.

And, conventional wisdom would say that, with that monkey off of his back, he goes into Wimbledon with a full head of steam, no more Sampras burden, and lots of confidence where he will probably win. And, Roger hasn’t lost the US Open in five years. He could even gain the No. 1 ranking back.

So if Roger wins, it puts him on a trajectory that will make it most difficult to ever catch him (which we know the competitive side of Rafa wants to do). To complicate that matter for Rafa, in order to have a chance to catch Roger, Rafa needed to be able to count on another two or three French Open titles which he now knows cannot be seen as a given as much as they were seen that way before yesterday. So, to know that a Roger win likely means he’ll never catch up to Roger and, in spite of that, Rafa still says he wants Roger to win and that Roger deserves it, I have to assume that he really does mean it.

And that may be the classiest thing of all that he did today…to show that even in what must be one of his darkest hours, he’s can still be thinking of someone besides himself and wishing someone else good fortune. From this Roger fan, all I can say is…well done Rafa. I respected you before and my respect has grown.

Вчера Рафаэль Надаль заставил нас переосмыслить слово «смирение».

То, как этот 22-летний теннисист встретил самое досадное из поражений, которые ему когда-либо приходилось терпеть на грунте – со стоической зрелостью, продемонстрировать которую способны далеко немногие, с достоинством и пониманием того, что жизнь продолжается – открыло нам новую грань окружающей его ауры простоты и трезвого подхода к жизни.

Странно, что всё это пишу именно я. Я же болею за Федерера. Я же должен прыгать от радости, находить придирки и выискивать двусмысленности, подтрунивать над тем, как он держался на пресс-конференции (мол, «тоже мне, святоша!»), рассуждать, что его самообладание было всего лишь фасадом, за которым скрывались от внешнего мира его внутренние переживания.

Но я просто неспособен так поступить… Если бы я так поступил, я был бы самым жестоким из всех садистов мира.

Не могу сказать, что я не хотел, чтобы он проиграл… Да, я этого хотел. Но я не хотел, чтобы он проиграл какому-то непонятному шведу, который, победив Рафу, считает, что теперь Бьорн Борг должен слать ему поздравительные СМС-ки, словно он только что покорил Эверест.

Я хотел, чтобы Рафа встретился в финале с Федерером, хотел, чтобы они вновь сошлись на поле боя и вписали еще одну яркую главу в историю их соперничества. И я надеялся, что в этот раз всё сложится в пользу Федерера.

Не злорадствовать, но наблюдать за их битвой до самого конца (боль от прошлогоднего поражения еще не улеглась), наблюдать, как они скрещивают ракетки, на любом покрытии, в любом матче, на любом турнире – вот истинное наслаждение для глаз. И ничто бы не сравнилось с радостью от того, что Федерер выиграл трофей у Рафы Надаля.

Круг бы замкнулся!

И хотя его поражение положило конец подобным мечтам и надеждам, я всё-таки рад, что вчера болел за Рафу до самого конца. И мне было вдвойне приятно прочитать текст его пресс-конференции на официальном сайте Ролан Гаррос.

Как болельщик, я тяжело переживаю проигрыши. Иногда я даже чуть не дохожу до рассуждений из серии «зелен виноград». Но когда я прочитал те слова, которые этот парень сказал после матча, у меня возникло ощущение, что мне следует спрятаться от всех на краю света и сидеть там, закрыв лицо руками от ужасного стыда.

Проиграть – это одно, но выйти и говорить об этом так, как будто ничего особенного не произошло, отдавая при этом дань уважения человеку, который в это время совсем неподалеку вовсю распространяется о своем величии – это поступок, требующий колоссальной силы и достойный овации стоя.

Когда тебя все прочат фаворитом, когда ты идешь на новый рекорд, и вдруг всё вот так рушится, признать это и сказать: «Да, я допустил ошибку, и в будущем я надеюсь извлечь из этого урок»…

Это непросто и немногие способны держаться при этом так же уверенно, как Рафа.

То, с какой смелостью Рафа принял реальность произошедшего, возможно даже гораздо раньше, чем его болельщики и друзья, показывает, насколько он рассудительный человек и великий профессионал.

Множество самых разных мужчин и женщин – как части единого целого – составляют мир тенниса. И как же прекрасно, что огромной – больше чем жизнь – частью этого мира является Рафаэль Надаль.

И в победе, и в поражении… Vamos Rafa!

Rafael Nadal finds deep meaning in defeat

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Shakespeare certainly thought so. In the defining soliloquy of Henry IV Part 1, Prince Hal states: “If all the year were playing holidays, To sport would be as tedious as to work; But, when they seldom come, they wish'd-for come, And nothing pleaseth but rare accidents.” Rafael Nadal had a rare accident on Sunday.

Well, rare does not really do it justice. It was an unprecedented, unexpected, utterly unforeseen accident of the kind that comes around once in a sporting lifetime; a defeat every bit as shocking as Mike Tyson's against James “Buster” Douglas more than 19 years ago when an aura of invincibility was shattered in the moment it took a gloved fist to swivel a previously impenetrable jaw.

Nadal had never lost at Roland Garros; he had won 32 straight matches (he had also won 32 straight sets stretching back to the final with Roger Federer in 2007); and he had done so with an authority and an imperiousness that brooked no dispute. The Coupe Des Mousquetaires seemed as near as damn it to being the personal possession of the conquistadorial Spaniard, with his opponents less pretenders than subjects.

Then Nadal lost. To Robin Söderling (who?). A Swede seeded at No23 in the competition (how low?). A man who had little reputation on clay and even less of a reputation in the minds of tennis fans around the world, even if his status is on an upward trajectory after his demolition of Nikolay Davydenko in yesterday's quarter-final. Many of us did not even bother to tune into the match, fearful that it would not even be a match. A waste of our time. A waste of Nadal's time. A waste of Söderling's time.

A warm-up, at best, for Nadal's next contest.

And then he lost.

Some will take Nadal's defeat as eloquent testimony to sport's infinite capacity to spring surprises, to keep us guessing, to ravish us with its glorious capriciousness. And there is something in that. But Nadal took a different lesson, a subtler lesson, dare I say it, a more philosophical lesson. In his defeat, Nadal told us that he had glimpsed the meaning of victory.

It was a crowded press conference after the match. Neil Harman, the tennis correspondent of The Times (a man who, if you ask me, has one of the most wondrous jobs on the planet), wrote that it was stuffy and airless, the room so full of people and curiosity, so weighed down with disbelief, that it was difficult to breathe. Nadal came in with his boyish face and sculpted biceps and, sensing the tumult, raised an eyebrow.

Then came his quote, one of the more revelatory to emerge from a post-match press conference, occasions that typically incubate soulless banalities: “Defeats never make you grow, but you also realise how difficult what I achieved up until today was, and this is something you need sometimes. You need a defeat to give the value to your victories.”
And it was that last sentiment that penetrated the deepest, many discerning something vaguely Kipling-esque in its powerful simplicity. “You need a defeat to give the value to your victories.”

Nadal almost made it sound like a blessing (the type well disguised); that his success at Roland Garros had endured for so long that victory was beginning to lose its emotional vitality; that his reign in Paris had, to paraphrase Shakespeare, begun to feel like an overlong holiday. How better to remind oneself of the savour of victory than to taste the bitterness of defeat?

Partly, no doubt, the sentiment was expressed by Nadal to help him to come to terms with the shock and disappointment of his loss; it was, in essence, the kind of post-match rationalisation that sportsmen often indulge in when walking out of the exit door. They spend their lives striving for victory, punishing their bodies and minds in pursuit of fame and glory and then, when they lose, they tell us it did not matter all that much after all.

Nadal was at it again in his blog on Monday, evoking Boris Becker's famous line (used after the German's defeat in the second round at Wimbledon in 1987: “I lost a game of tennis. Nobody died”) when he wrote: “The first thing I want to say is that it was only a tennis match yesterday. No big drama. It happens, and I knew it would happen one day. It had to be yesterday and well, now I just have to look at that match and see what I did wrong. It is not a tragedy.”

We all use these little psychological ruses as we make our way through the world; creating mini-narratives to help us through local difficulties, grand narratives that help us to make sense of it all. I, too, often dwelled on the triviality of sport in the moments after I had lost a precious contest, but it was not the kind of speculation you would have often found me indulging in when swilling champagne after one of my (sadly rare) triumphs.

But Nadal's idea that defeat gives value to victories does not simply express a consolation, but a truth that is far deeper. A truth rooted in the mind. A truth with which we are all familiar.

The first time I had an article published in The Times I sprinted down to the local newsagent and marvelled at the black-and-white reality of my byline. I walked around my neighbourhood in Richmond with the paper under my arm showing anybody who cared to look. The Times! Me! Can you believe it? Isn't it wonderful?

Over the years, that excitement gave way to a frisson, then to a mere echo of a frisson and now seeing my byline has become part of the fabric of my life. I will miss it desperately when, for whatever reason, I stop writing, but its continuation is no longer capable of elevating my soul and electrifying my spirit. Not in the way it used to. That is not to “diss” The Times but merely to state a law of psychology.

None of this is to dispute that Nadal would have enjoyed victory at this year's French Open. He would have felt a palpable sense of elation and marvelled at how his name was being writ ever larger into the iconography of the game he so dearly loves. But would it have compared to the virginal emotions of his first victory, or even his second or third? Would it mean quite as much if he were defending his title for the tenth or fifteenth time?

Defeat is a precious gift to the all-conquering sportsman: an opportunity to learn, to adapt, to develop. But ultimately it is an opportunity to rediscover the essential meaning of victory. That is why Nadal will return stronger, deeper and hungrier.

Nothing pleaseth but rare accidents.

Sport is so often about taking unexpected opportunities, something that will vex Andy Murray as he comes to terms with yesterday's defeat by Fernando González. The Chilean played well, his forehand producing thunderbolts from the back of the court, particularly when running around to play it from the backhand side, but it was a match that a peak-form Murray would have won. And, deep down, the Scot knows it.

Поражение – это бесценный дар для непобедимого спортсмена. Это возможность вынести уроки, развиваться дальше. Но самое главное – это возможность вновь открыть для себя значимость победы. Поэтому Надаль вернется более сильным, более зрелым, более жадным до побед.

Я теми местами с автором не согласна, в которых он мечтает о том, как Рождер выиграет у Рафы. У меня-то мечты прямо противоположные, естессно!
Тебе тоже спасибо за перевод (и за все предыдущие тоже). Хоть я по-английски и понимаю, по-русски оно всё же как-то ближе и роднее, тем более когда это так мастерски выполнено. А тут английский вариант даже читать не пришлось.

We’re writing you with deep feelings of sympathy and guilt. We’re ashamed for not having done this sooner. Luckily, it’s never too late to say sorry. Therefor, today – on your 23rd birthday – we’re asking your forgiveness: perdón, perdón, perdón. lo sentimos mucho.

We shouldn’t have howled along with the wolves on Sunday after your defeat against Robin Söderling. Or in this case: along with the morons in the stands of Court Phillipe Chatrier. Your Court Philippe Chatrier. The temple where you wrote history 4 years long.

The booing you received when you left Paris is a disgrace to the sport. The cheers for Söderling are at least surreal. You only have to think back to your match in the clay court tournament in Rome and watch one of the dirtiest tricks in the history of men’s tennis Söderling tried against you (follow the link above to find that video).

Contrary to Söderling, you proved that a tennis player should not only be great in victory but also in defeat. Because you were great in defeat. More and more people bear witness to that after having watched it with their own eyes.

Dick Norman said that you – even though you were in a rush to get back to Mallorca – still took the time out to thank every employee in the players lounge personally. This is the sort of courtesy they can never expect to get from Robin Söderling. The (security) people at the gates of Roland Garros know very well that each morning when you come in, you greet everybody whereas Robin Söderling never even nodded at anybody.

We have to shiver when we see how Robin Söderling is described as a great guy with the face of an angel. When we met him in the hotel we shared – he came out of the elevator – we nearly suffocated in a cloud of sulfur and tar. It is high time that one thing has to be said clearly: in the world of tennis, devils are described as saints and the good souls as sinners.

Compared with the “friendly Federer”, you were always described as that brutish animal. The beast who was only busy with his own game and who never took the time out for others. Do tennis fans not know how different it really is behind the scenes? That you’re always prepared to give autographs after a training session, whereas Roger Federer stopped doing that years ago? That you live more for your sport than your everlasting rival? That you are where you deserve to be: at the top of the ATP world ranking?

From a good source, we know that you cried non-stop in the taxi on the way from your hotel to the airport. This only proves how deeply the defeat and the behavior of the crowd affected you. It also proves how courageous you behaved in those first hours after your defeat.
Roger Federer also cries, but only in the presence of cameras.

For this and for so much more, for having written nothing and for having howled along with the wolves in the forest, I ask you: perdón, perdón, perdón. Maybe, some tennis fans will change their mind about you. Quizás, quizás, quizás

Спасибо Вам огромное за замечательные переводы!

Читаю такие слова и каждый раз удивляюсь, что Рафа еще лучше и достойнее, чем я считала его минуту назад... И конца этому видимо не будет...
Рафа - настоящий чемпион не только в спорте, а и в жизни, а этого, на мой взгляд, добиться гораздо сложнее...
Какой бесценный пример он подает молодому поколению... Какая же он умница...

К написанному выше хочу добавить, что Росана Ромеро в своем блоге описала поведение публики после матча. У меня даже рука не поднимается написать об этом. Я не могу. Я очень надеюсь, что Рафа этого не видел и не слышал.

Еще Росана написала о том инциденте, когда Рафа, уходя с корта, отмахнулся от журналиста, который должен был брать интервью. Французское телевидение со сладострастием многократно показывало этот эпизод в замедленном режиме. Оказывается, Рафе сказали, что интервью у него брать не будут. Он и отмахнулся: вам не надо, мне - тем более.

Сегодня во время женских полуфиналов Дмитриева обмолвилась, что вроде как журналист, который должен был брать интервью после матча Надаля и Содерлинга, отстранен от работы после инцидента с Рафой. На самом деле, он должен был говорить с ним лишь после того, как Содерлинг сделает подпись на камеру, но был слишком шокирован поражением Надаля и поспешил узнать, что же произошло. А Рафа к тому же к интервью был не готов.

На РГ уже не первый человек отстранен от работы после "инцидента" с Рафой. Ничего, восстановят.
Дмитриевой не верю. Я думаю, что Росана лучше знает, что там произошло, она получает информацию из превых рук, в отличие от Дмитриевой, которая собирает сплетни на каждом углу.

Насчет того, что восстановят, сомневаться не приходится. Во Франции якобы уже целый бум по поводу того, что лучше журналиста нет (ну это продолжение из сплетен Дмитриевой. Я сама, кстати, ее почти никогда не слушаю, разве что уж совсем нет иного выбора - а сегодня, к сожалению, как раз был такой случай)

А вообще, ну ее, эту Дмитриеву. Я тебе другое хочу сказать: огромное спасибо за переводы

ITF honour Navratilova, Nadal and Jankovic

The tennis family gathered last night for the ITF World Champions Dinner, held at the Pavillon d’Armenonville in Paris.

As well as celebrating the achievements of the 2008 ITF World Champions, the ITF Board of Directors presented its highest accolade, the Philippe Chatrier Award, to tennis legend Martina Navratilova. Former British Davis Cup player and current television broadcaster Andrew Castle hosted the evening with ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti presenting the awards, trophies designed by internationally-recognised sculptor Laurence Broderick, to the World Champions.

This year’s recipients were Singles Champions Rafael Nadal (ESP) and Jelena Jankovic (SRB). Due to the fact that they’d lost in the French Open on Sunday and Monday (respectively), they sent their apologies via video acceptance. Jose Luis Escanuela (President of the RFET) accepted Nadal’s award on stage, and Serbian Tennis Federation President, Slobodan Zivojinovic, proudly received Jankovic’s trophy and said a few words about Serbia’s success in the sport.

Other winners collecting their trophies on the night were Doubles Champions Daniel Nestor (CAN) and Nenad Zimonjic (SRB), and Cara Black (ZIM) and Liezel Huber (USA); Junior Champions Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA); and Wheelchair Champions Shingo Kunieda (JPN) and Esther Vergeer (NED), who received the trophy for a record ninth year. There was also a presentation to Women’s tennis pioneer Peachy Kellmeyer , who was honoured with the ITF/ITHF Golden Achievement Award on stage.

After being awarded the Philippe Chatrier Award, Martina Navratilova thanked her parents and tennis for giving her such a fulfilling life and career and singled out former Czech Grand Slam champion Jan Kodes, who was present at the dinner, as a childhood inspiration. Navratilova, whose love for tennis led to a 33-year career, paved the way for future generations of her sport, many of whom she was playing against when she finally retired in 2006 at the age of 49.

Following her defection to the United States as an 18-year-old, the Prague-born player brought a new level of athleticism to the women’s game to become the most dominant player in her sport. In particular her rivalry with Chris Evert from the mid 1970s to late 1980s was legendary, and spurred her on to greater success. Navratilova went on to win 167 singles, 177 doubles and 10 mixed doubles titles in her career, an open era record for both singles and doubles. Instantly recognisable and as well known off the court as on it, Navratilova’s influence extends to the many charities that she supports.
