Nadal press conference

Nadal's words after the match against Verdasco

Q. Last night's match was a very physical match. Coming back again to play today, how tough is that to play another match so soon after last night?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Difficult conditions, no? Last match last night the court was slow; the ball was heavy. Today was completely different conditions. The ball is flying so much. Yeah, I like the conditions of today. But after the change of last night, it's a big change, no? Last night I played really well, and today I didn't play my best. I had some mistakes, especially in the second set. The beginning, I had a lot of mistakes. The first set was okay. I did well. But the second, I had a little bit lucky he had important mistakes in some important points.

Q. The second set your errors came from concentration or a bit tired, or what do you think was the reason?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No, No. I had some mistakes. That's the tennis.

Q. Does it concentrate the mind, do you think?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Maybe. Maybe. I think that the big difference is I played more aggressive in that moments. So that's what I have to try to do during all the match for tomorrow: play more aggressive. Today I played two or three meters behind the baseline, so I have to play more inside if I want to play a little bit better, no? That's the thing. The only thing and the most important thing for me right now.

Q. It depends you play Fernando?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Well, he has a big topspin and big shots, but in the end, it's an attitude. It's okay return four meters behind, because he had very good kick and topspin was very high.
But after return, I have to go inside and I have to play a long return, and the next ball I have to play inside, from the baseline, or one meter behind, not another time three meters. That was the mistake of today. Normally I return three meter, but after I go inside, and today I didn't.

 quote:
Yeah, I think I played really well. One of my best matches on clay sure this year. I don't know of my career, but I'm playing at the very good level today, so I'm very happy. Very happy about my level today. Very happy about this victory.

6-1 6-0... Hidden text. Click here

NADAL: 'IT'S ALWAYS AMAZING TO BE IN THE FINAL HERE'

After his 6-3, 6-3 semi-final win over Fernando Gonzalez, world No1 and red-hot favourite Rafael Nadal thanked the Rome crowd for their support and looked forward to Sunday’s final.

“I’m very happy. It’s a very good result, 6-3, 6-3 against a tough opponent like Fernando,” said the Majorcan straight after the match. “I'm very happy about be in this final another time. Playing in Rome is always a pleasure. The crowd is always fantastic with me - I remember a lot of things about the finals here. The crowd always supported me a lot, so it's always an amazing feeling to come back here and be in the final.”

“I had one bad game with my serve after the 3 2 in the first set when I had the first break,” Nadal continued. “He broke me back to 3 3, but later I didn't make a lot of mistakes. Yesterday I didn't feel in control in some moments, but today I am happy. I know tomorrow is going to be a really tough match, and I will have to be playing at 100% to have a good chance to win. The important thing is - don't make a lot of mistakes. He’s going to play aggressive because it's his game. I’m going to try to play aggressive too. I have to play aggressive with my forehand and try to have control of the point with my forehand. If I don't do that, it’s going be really difficult, because if he is attacking me it’s really tough to play against Novak.”

INTERNAZIONALI BNL D'ITALIA (MEN), May 2, 2009

R. NADAL/F. González
6-3, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Are you pleased with your match today and the fact you'll be in the final once again?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, very happy. Sure, very good result 6-3, 6-3 against tough opponent like Fernando, so it's very good result. I'm very happy about be in this final another time, no?
Always playing in Rome is a pleasure. The crowd was always fantastic with me. I remember a lot of things about the finals of here. Always the crowd supported me a lot, so it's always amazing feeling come back here and be in the final.

Q. You said yesterday you made quite a lot of mistakes. Did you feel today that you eliminated, got rid of, the mistakes and it was a better performance?
RAFAEL NADAL: I have some ones. I had one bad game with my serve after the 3-2 in the first set when I had the first break. He broke me back in the 3-2 to 3-3. Yeah, I had only this moment, no?
Later I had -- no, I didn't have a lot of mistakes, no? And when I have the mistakes, it's because I can do the mistakes. I think yesterday I didn't feel this control some moments. But today, yes, I am happy.

Q. How much do you feel you have improved since Monte-Carlo? You're playing Novak in the final again.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if I am better or worse. I don't know.
The only thing I know is I won in Monte-Carlo and I won in Barcelona. That's very good news for me. And final in Rome, so that's unbelievable. I'm very happy about everything.
I know tomorrow going to be a really tough match, and I have to be playing at my 100% to have good chances to win, no?

Q. How do you feel the conditions are here comparing to Monte-Carlo?
RAFAEL NADAL: A little bit different, yeah.

Q. Is it your favorite, or...
RAFAEL NADAL: No. Monte-Carlo is, yeah. Monte-Carlo is. Always I feel the ball more inside the racquet in Monte-Carlo. Here the ball is...

Q. It's slower here?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think here is faster, yeah. More crazy bounce. I like that, but you have to be playing really well.

Q. Against Novak, what is the key for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: Important thing is don't have a lot of mistakes. He gonna to play aggressive, I think, because it's his game. I gonna to try to play aggressive, too. I have to play aggressive with my forehand and try to have control of the point with my forehand. That's what I gonna try, no?
If I don't do that gonna be really difficult, because if he is attacking me is really tough to play against Novak, no?

Q. Are you ready for the football game?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I am ready. If you are ready, I am ready.

 quote:
Q. You do play some remarkable tennis when you're breakpoints down. You seem to reserve some of your best play for when you're in the biggest trouble.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I didn't preserve nothing, no? Yeah, I did well when I had breakpoints against.

...

Q. It's more difficult to play against a left-hander?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. No, that's not excuse, no? Only excuse is I had to do anyway. If it's lefty, righty, doesn't matter.

Roman Ruler: Rafa Wins Record Fourth Rome Crown

By Tennis Week
Sunday, May 03, 2009

His weekly diet of Sunday silverware has not diminished Rafael Nadal's appetite for excellence.

Playing every point as if powered by pure hunger, Nadal reasserted his dominance and concluded a week in which he did not surrender a set dining on the silver tournament title trophy.

The World No. 1 mixed his shots like a master chef skillfully blending all the right ingredients in dethroning defending Rome champion Novak Djokovic, 7-6(2), 6-2, to capture his record fourth career Rome Masters 1000 championship in today's final.

At the tender age of 22, Nadal continues to stamp his signature on tennis history. The top-seeded Spaniard collected his 15th career Masters Series shield, moving him one ahead of Roger Federer for second place on the all-time leader list behind Andre Agassi, who won a record 17 Masters Series shields. Nadal won his 25th career clay-court title to edge to within five titles of six-time French Open champion Bjorn Borg, who won 30 career clay-court championships.

By failing to defend his title, Djokovic will lose the No. 3 ranking to Andy Murray on May 11, when last season's ranking points drop from the ATP computer. The 21-year-old Serbian has owned the No. 3 spot since August 2007. Nadal put more distance between himself and Djokovic in raising his record to 13-4 against the Serbian.

It was Nadal's third Masters Series crown of the season following wins at Indian Wells and Monte Carlo. Nadal unleashed his trademark celebratory bite of the silver title trophy while Djokovic was left to contemplate another setback to a man who competes with the dogged determination of a pit pull with lock jaw devouring a chew toy.

It was Nadal's 30th consecutive clay-court victory. He swept his third straight clay-court title in three weeks after wins in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and racked up his ninth consecutive clay-court crown. His last loss on clay came last May when he lost his opening match in Rome against compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero — a match Nadal played while suffering from blisters on both feet.

Contesting his third consecutive Masters Series final, Djokovic showed the right tactics to trouble Nadal, but confounding the champion and conquering him are two entirely different things.

Though Djokovic actually played a better tennis at times today than he did in last month's Monte Carlo final where he became the only man to take a set from Nadal on clay this season in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 loss, he could not sustain the high level of play required to actually win a set from the king of clay. Djokovic's emotion — and an almost child-like stubborness bordering on lunacy to continuously try to hit drop shot winners when that play failed him on big points nearly all day long — got the better of him at times in the second set as Nadal reeled off four straight games to close the two hour, three-minute victory.

Amid gusty conditions, Nadal held on to his early service break, working his way through a 30-all game to hold for 4-2.

Deadlocked at 30-all in the eighth game, Nadal crunched a crosscourt backhand that forced Djokovic off the court in stabbing a desperate stretch reply. Recognizing the opportunity, Nadal raced forward and place a high forehand volley into the open court. He negated a strong Djokovic return, backpedalling to find the inside of the line with an inside-out forehand for a 5-3 lead.

Driving successive forehand returns, Nadal opened a 0-30 lead in the ninth game. Four straight points to Nadal provoked Djokovic into playing more aggressive tennis.

Successive succesful trips to net drew him even at 30-all. But an errant forehand down the line approached missed the mark and Nadal had a set point 41 minutes into the match. The Spaniard screamed in disgust when his backhand settled into the bottom of the net. Given a reprieve, Djokovic delivered a pair of service winners and toweled off after pulling to within 4-5.

Nadal netted a forehand down the line and Djokovic wrong-footed him on the next point, prompting Nadal's one-handed slice backhand to float long handing the Serbian a break point. Nadal, who had been serving almost exlusively wide on the ad side to that point, flipped the script and surprised Djokovic with a serve down the middle. Djokovic missed the return and slammed his racquet down in disgust.

Undeterred by that missed break-point chance, Djokovic earned a second break point when Nadal's diagonal forehand strayed wide of the sideline. On the 10th shot of the ensuing rally, Djokovic played determined defense, punctuated by louder grunts and drew the forehand error from Nadal, pounding his fist against his chest after forging a 5-all tie.

It didn't take long for Nadal to retaliate. Nadal dipped a forehand at an approaching Djokovic's feet and his volley died in the net handing Nadal a break point. When Djokovic netted a backhand he slammed his racquet to the court and received a racquet abuse warning. It did little to calm the Djokovic temper. Sitting in in his court-side seat he wound up and smashed his water bottle before feeding his anger with a bite of banana.

At 6-5, 30-all they played the point of the match — a 20 shot rally that saw Djokovic attack behind a backhand down the line and knock off a forehand volley only to watch Nadal's stretch forehand volley elude him as Nadal earned a set point. Working the short court, Djokovic slide into an exquisite backhand angled volley that died in the dirt before Nadal could revive it. In one of his few tactical errors of the set, Nadal hit a poor backhand drop shot that sat up near the service line, Djokovic swooped forward, hitting backhand winner crosscourt for break point. A nervous Nadal framed his forehand, shanking a shot to hand Djokovic the break and setting up only the third tie breaker they have played in 17 matches against each other.

Djokovic slid a slice serve wide to open the breaker then worked Nadal around the court, wrong-footing him to create an opening, but dumped another drop shot into the net. Djokovic pulled his blue shirt up over his eyes in horror and snatched at the ends of his hair as if trying to yank it out of his scalp.

On the other side of the net, Nadal dug in and when Djokovic's running backhand pass down the line landed wide, Nadal had a 5-2 lead. Djokovic committed a forehand error then dumped another drop shot into net as Nadal took the first set in 74 minutes.

Q. Congratulations, Rafa. What this victory means for you?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Thank you very much. Sure, one of the most important of my career, no? Win in Rome is a big title. I have right now 15 Masters Series in my career, so that's a lot, and I'm very happy for that.
Sure win here in Rome is always unbelievable. It's a very good tournament, and very happy for the victory.

Q. How did you feel during the match? You started very well and then it became more difficult.
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yes, I started well, no? I have 40 15 for him the first game. Later I won the game. It was important the first break. But later was really tough to return. The ball is having big bounce. And, well, when he put the first serve in it was really tough. I didn't have chances to have the second break only in the 5 3. 5 3 I had another one set point, important set point. I hit one backhand to put the winner, and I didn't play good backhand there, no?
But later I think I have a little bit unlucky with the 5 4. I played two good points and I had two mistakes with the forehand down the line. But, yeah, it was well played, because I played aggressive, no? In the 6 5, something I played, yeah, a little bit worse in the 6 5, no? But I had my chance. I have I think 30 Love, so, yeah, tough moments. That was the toughest moments of the match. First point in the tiebreak was for him, but important thing for me was I was anyway having two times the serve to win the set. I lost both times, but I was 100% mentally for the tiebreak, so that's important. Really important.

Q. You mentioned that you've now won 15 Masters Series titles. Are you interested in breaking records for the most Masters titles?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I would love have more than yeah, I would love have more than 17, no? Right now I have 15. I'm very happy for that. I'm gonna try my best in the next tournaments. Important thing for me right now I have 15. It's a lot. Sure, I would love to have more than 17, no?

Q. You get asked this after every tournament, but how are you feeling physically after three successive weeks and three successive tournaments and three successive wins?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Really well, no? Yeah, I have one long match against Novak in Monte Carlo, but after that I never lost another set. So, yeah, I didn't play very long matches during this tournament. It was 7 6 today, but the other matches I think I have always 6 3 the maximum. So that's very good to play three weeks in a row. In Monte Carlo and Barcelona the same. I play 6 2, 6 2; 6 2, 6 0; 6 3, 6 2, and, well, the final 6 2, 7 5. But not very long set, so it's only today. So that's really important to play three weeks in a row.

Q. About the sets that you never lose. If you never lose a set, you lose only one set in three tournaments. In Roland Garros how can you expect to possibly lose three sets?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Every tournament is completely different, no, so it doesn't come nothing before. So right now I'm focus on Madrid, you know. Yeah, Roland Garros is after two or three weeks, so, yeah, first Madrid. Later in Roland Garros we will see. Important thing is play well. If I am playing well, I gonna have a lot of chances to have good results in both tournaments. But you never know what can happen, no? Tennis is always like this.

Q. How much it have been important for you for Djokovic to know that you are the best on the clay, and then of course you are the best in the world. Do you think this is really important in this match? Of course now when it's possible that you meet the opponent that have a sort of be afraid because are the first?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I think every match is different than you have to win on court. You never win off court. You never win the matches before the match. You win the matches playing, so that's what I feel, no?

Q. Did you think the impersonation of Djokovic of you was good? Did you like it?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No, for me, doesn't matter, no? Yeah, well, if the people ask, the normal thing is do, no? For me, doesn't matter. I think it was funny.

Q. Are you more surprised about yourself because you're able to do this, or are you surprised about your opponent because they don't beat you? They are not very, very strong? Are you surprised about something in this long streak you have?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I didn't listen. Tell me. (In Spanish.) Ah, yes, I think when you start the clay season always is the same, no? Last few years you think it's impossible to repeat the same like last years. That's what I feel before I start. But right now I didn't. I didn't. Not already. Because remain win in Roland Garros to repeat the same. But anyway the result of Roland Garros or my clay season was really good, no? Because in the end, if I go to Roland Garros and I lose, I think it's not fair to say I didn't play very good clay season.
Anyway the result on Madrid and Roland Garros, the clay season is unbelievable. I'm very happy for everything. Sure it's a big surprise for me to win three titles in a row in three weeks. But, yeah, I never did in the past, so it's a good thing for me to know I can do. But, sure, I prefer have week off between Barcelona and Rome, no?

Q. Could you give us a feeling about Roger Federer's week here? Do you think he could be enough well prepared for Roland Garros?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Madrid remains. I think you forget Madrid, no? He had good matches and he almost win yesterday. He has set and 2 0 and breakpoint for double break in the second, 3 1 in the third. So he has lost the chances to win and to win against a very good player like Novak. So, yeah, he's at the level. Tennis level is there. That's not will be a problem, sure.

Q. You played Djokovic in Monte Carlo and here. Where was more difficult, and was there any difference between the two matches? Were you more in danger in your head there?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No, I was more in danger in Monte Carlo, because I had breakpoint in the first game of the set and I lose the set. But my feeling was I was playing a little bit better here than Monte Carlo. The court is more dangerous here than in Monte Carlo to play against him. You understand me?

Q. It's more difficult here?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I feel.

Q. Why?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Sometimes it's really hard to control the ball, no? The ball is flying a lot. Monte Carlo the ball stays a little bit more. If I'm playing well, I have more chances to have control of the point more times when I am returning, no? But, yeah, it's stupid to say this court is not good for me when I won four times. This court is perfect for me. I like a lot of the crazy bounce, but you have to be playing really well. If you are playing so so, it's more danger.

Q. Are you happy to have to play in Madrid now? Because it's another important tournament for you. Is it not too much in a row before the French Open?
RAFAEL NADAL:
That's the calendar, no? I have to play. Sure playing in Spain is always special motivation. The only thing is playing in altitude. The last tournament of Roland Garros is completely different conditions than Madrid and Paris. Believe me, because I played there and I know. Gonna be a really difficult tournament, no? Bu, yeah, maybe I would love don't have the tournament in altitude before Roland Garros. I prefer have, for example, another tournament with similar conditions than Madrid before Monte Carlo before Roland Garros. But that's the calendar, and I gonna try my best there to have a good result.

Q. How will you spend the next two or three days? Will you not pick up a racquet?
RAFAEL NADAL:
(Imitating golf swing.)

Q. Golf?
RAFAEL NADAL:
A little bit.

Q. You're going to Mallorca?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yeah. Well, not Mallorca. London with rain, no? (Laughter.)

Google)

Ana Maria Parera: "Try to follow the founding principles of Rafa Nadal"

Nobody better than a mother to launch an exciting project

- To take charge of the type of interview what his beautiful gesture, becoming the president of the Rafa Nadal Foundation, founded by his son.
- Rafa has been very lucky to be where it is, because, after all, has been a huge fortune. Yes, worked, worked well, but he feels privileged to have succeeded the achievements and the state you live. He decided to try to create a foundation to help people. And who better than her mother, someone who knows her love for children and their desires, to set that up.

- That you preside is a guarantee that things will be made in the style Rafa Nadal is, under the personality that reflects the world's number one.
- We want the foundation to continue the principles, values, Rafa. He, for his career, for their commitments, for his dedication to tennis, it can not provide long time now. What the foundation is trying to follow his principles. For example, our assistance will focus primarily on children under 14 years, because Rafa has a great sensitivity towards them and very easy treatment: he loves contact with them and pleasant. Another essential point of our future projects will be the link between sport and education.

- Of course, Rafa is the image of its foundation, but you are trying to separate the two worlds of competition and his project to help children.
- One thing is the career of Rafa and another very different, though parallel, projects which can initiate, sponsor or oversee its creation. Clearly it is essential to help and support of Rafa for everything we put in place. We want our foundation to develop the same capabilities of seriousness and dedication of Rafa. And, as demonstrated throughout his life, we also have our feet on the ground and go slowly.

- What drew conclusions after more than a year of preparations?
- The key for us is that we do, we do well. We want to be transparent in our actions and those who support us financially and how they know where their money is invested. We want to monitor what we put in place. However, we are modest: just starting, we want to grow but we have no hurry and, of course, we know we will take our first steps together. There have been foundations and NGOs who have been on the road to start big projects, then have not borne fruit. Nothing could be further from our intention to disappoint those who trust us. We do not want to create false expectations.

- Hence, his first project, a tennis school in India, with the collaboration of the Fundación Vicente Ferrer.
- The truth is that we are thrilled with the idea and we have already put the first stone of this exciting project. Let me tell you, first of all, we are very pleased that Mr. Ferrer had left the hospital in Vellore and has begun to recover at home. We know the final was his son Moncho and managers of their institution, as their collaboration is vital to realize our idea. In September, we will begin to build the school tennis and I wish in a future we can convert even in residence.

- The idea is to conquer the children bring to school, focused more on educating them in ways, to prepare to succeed in life, to discover new talents in tennis, right?
- Exactly. We want the school to be an instrument of education, both at household and personal matter. We know the many needs of children in many corners of the globe, not just in India, not only in the town of Anantapur, where they install our school, but trying to put our grain of sand, and above all, to attract children to school through sport and to facilitate their education, because we all know that it is much easier to reach them through the game, the fun.

- What has been gratifying to the people of Anantapur idea?
- Vicente Ferrer is making it a spectacular job. Despite the precarious conditions in which people live, there is high school. The children are happy with any idea they would play and train. We want to give them a chance in life, not tennis. Sport is one of the best schools of life. And the goal is to train as people think of them as children, not as labor intensive. With Rafa's image is much more difficult to easily demonstrate that sport, in addition to sports, also serves to convey values such as education, solidarity, responsibility and companionship.

Internazionali BNL d'Italia
Rome, ItalyMay 3, 2009

NADAL CLINCHES RECORD FOURTH ROME TITLE

Reigning ATP World Tour Champion Rafael Nadal won a record fourth Internazionali BNL d’Italia title with a hard-fought 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic on Sunday at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament in Rome.
Nadal is rewarded with 1000 South African Airways 2009 ATP Ranking points and ?434,000, while defeat for World No. 3 Djokovic means that he will be surpassed in the Rankings by No. 4 Andy Murray on 11 May when the 2008 Rome points drop off.

The 22-year-old Nadal has now amassed a staggering 15 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 shields - second only (since 1990) to the now-retired Andre Agassi, who holds the record with 17 titles won during his illustrious 20-year career.

"[It is] one of the most important [titles] of my career," said Nadal. "[To] win in Rome is a big title. I have right now 15 Masters 1000 [wins] in my career, so that's a lot, and I'm very happy for that.

"[To] win here in Rome is always unbelievable. It's a very good tournament, and I am very happy for the victory. I am going to try my best in the next tournaments. Important thing for me right now I have 15 (Masters 1000 titles). It is a lot. Sure, I would love to have more than 17."

Victory marked Nadal’s 30th consecutive clay-court match win, including 16 wins in a row this season; his last loss on the surface came against Juan Carlos Ferrero in the Rome second round last year. During the span, he has won 71 of 75 sets and clinched four titles. Since 2005, Nadal has compiled an outstanding 147-4 match record on clay.

The Spaniard is currently seventh on the list of clay-court title leaders with 25 tour-level titles on the crushed brick. He is already over halfway to reaching Guillermo Vilas’ Open Era record of 45 triumphs.

In their second ATP World Tour final meeting in three weeks, Nadal was fast out of the blocks – breaking in the first game to stamp his authority early in the pair’s 17th meeting. However, two rare forehand errors from the Mallorcan when he served for the set at 5-4 brought Djokovic back into the set as he levelled at 5-5.

Djokovic failed to capitalise on his momentum and was immediately broken again by Nadal to trail 5-6. But the defending champion refused to relinquish the set without a continued fight and his persistence was rewarded as Nadal miss-hit a forehand to lose serve for the second time.

Six-time Grand Slam champion Nadal raised his level in the tie-break though and as he cut out his errors, Djokovic was unable to maintain his high-level of play and was made to pay the price as a failed drop shot trickled down his own side of the net to grant Nadal a hard-fought one-set lead.

The 21-year-old Djokovic produced more of the top form that saw him defeat Roger Federer in the semi-finals to stay on an even keel with Nadal early in the second set. But the Spaniard’s continued brilliance on the clay proved too hot for Djokovic to handle ultimately and he broke through in the sixth game as Djokovic double faulted under the pressure.

After two hours and three minutes of high-quality action, Nadal closed out his 13th victory over Djokovic with a second break of serve as he flicked a forehand pass up the line past the resigned Djokovic.

"Obviously it's his patience in the certain points (that is key)," Djokovic said. "When I needed to maybe stay a little bit more patient and just play the right shots I made some unforced errors. It happens a couple of times already on this surface that I'm close, and in the deciding moments he just overcomes the pressure better than me. But that's why he's the best in the world in this moment. Overall, I'm really happy with the week."

Nadal improved to a 22-1 event match record by clinching a record fourth Rome title. He previously won in 2005 and 2006 with epic five-set victories over Guillermo Coria and Roger Federer respectively, before winning his third successive title in the Italian capital with a straight-sets win over Fernando Gonzalez in 2007. Jaroslav Drobny (1950-52), Martin Mulligan (1963, ’65, ’67) and Thomas Muster (1990, ’95-96) are the others who have won three titles in Rome.

Nadal improved to an ATP World Tour-best 38-3 match record on the season after capturing his fifth tour-level title from six finals. He clinched his first hard-court Grand Slam title at the Australian Open with back-to-back five-set victories over Fernando Verdasco and Roger Federer before continuing his hard-court success at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells (d. Murray).

The left-hander then took his strong form into the European clay-court season, where he won the ATP World Tour Masters Monte-Carlo title (d. Djokovic) and Barcelona crown (d. Ferrer) for the fifth successive year.

"[Regardless] the result in Madrid and Roland Garros, the clay season is unbelievable. I'm very happy for everything. Sure it's a big surprise for me to win three titles in a row in three weeks. But I never did in the past, so it's a good thing for me to know I can do."

Nadal won his 36th tour-level title in his 45th final. He has 25-1 lifetime record in clay-court finals, with his lone loss coming to Roger Federer in the 2007 Hamburg final.

Djokovic was contesting his third consecutive ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final after finishing runner-up to Andy Murray in the Miami final and Nadal in Monte-Carlo. The Belgrade native, who will headline the inaugural event in his hometown next week, dropped to a 12-9 mark in tour-level finals. His most recent title, and his only one of the season, came in Dubai (l. to Ferrer) in February.

"I've been playing really well in the last three Masters 1000 events, and I'm really happy with the shape I'm in in this moment," said Djokovic. "Confidence is really important in this sport, in any sport. Right now I think I have good confidence. Hopefully I can continue with the successful tournament."

The right-hander captured the Rome title, his last at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level, last year with victory over Stanislas Wawrinka in the title match.

Rafael Nadal continues triumphant progress on favourite surface

Neil Harman

Three down, two to go. If anyone deserves a few days with his feet up, it is Rafael Nadal. Anna Maria, his mother, can have the three weeks of dirty washing, with its layers of caked-on dirt, as her son has bludgeoned his way through 14 matches, collected clay titles Nos 23, 24 and 25 and now pauses for a few days to prepare for three more weeks when he could further redefine the credos by which the sport used to be judged.

From this weekend, Nadal plays in Madrid, a tournament switched from autumn to spring, from hard court to clay, into the Caja Magica, the magic box. Not a bad place to welcome the man with all the tricks in the book — and a few more he has patented. Then it is on to Paris, for his attempt to add a fifth consecutive French Open title to his compendium. Is there anyone out there who seriously doubts he will do it, for is there a player on this planet who can win three sets against him in one match on clay?

Because of the lousy weather earlier in the week here, Nadal had to win five matches in five days to become the Rome Master for a fourth time — an historic moment. Björn Borg, Jaroslav Drobny, Martin Mulligan and Thomas Muster each won this title three times when it was the plain Italian Open; he has outdone these great champions and is not 23 until next month.

Novak Djokovic tried everything he knew in defence of his title and played some shots of rare audacity, but in the end, he was worn down, as everyone is. The result was 7-6, 6-2 in Nadal’s favour, though it was only when the spirit drained from the Serb from deuce at 2-2 in the second set, that even someone as imperious on this surface as the world No 1 could be relatively certain that this would another of his days.

The defeat means that Andy Murray will bypass Djokovic to take the Serb’s place as No 3 when the world rankings are announced next week.

It was not a final of the greatest quality. Both these titans looked a mite jaded at the end and no wonder, for they do not spare themselves. The throttle is out from the start, the contrasting flatter trajectory of Djokovic against the spitting spin of Nadal, inclination to attack versus outrageous defence, brio against brio and sometimes, dramatic introductions of subtlety and grace. What hurt Djokovic most was that, after forfeiting his first service game from 30-0 and 40-30, he was ahead only once, after the first point of the first-set tie-break. He was never able to breathe easily. Even when he broke back to 5-5, when Nadal was distracted by the chanting of a group of Roma fans passing from the adjacent Stadio Olimpico, Djokovic promptly dropped serve, to which he responded by decapitating his racket.

It is hard to keep a clear head against Nadal, for he forces the opponent to come up with shots they might not usually try. The drop shot is a risky strategy and when it comes off a couple of times, the tendency is to overplay it, which is how Djokovic came unstuck.

And he enjoyed his moments of triumph so much, raising his arms to the sky in one mock salute when he played a quite astonishing backhand half-volley when Nadal had blasted the ball straight at him, that it took him the next few rallies to get his head clear, by which time the Spaniard was racing away. His roar at the end was lost in the cries of his name. Since 2005, he has won 147 of his 151 matches on clay. A man rewriting history.

Rome Masters – “Clay court king” Nadal in private.

Eurosport, Monday, May 4, 2009

Eurosport met up with Rafael Nadal in Rome for a personal conversation. The world number one spoke about the rare moments of being alone, little anger outbursts, the financial crisis and fisher’s talk.

Q: Before the Rome tournament, Roger Federer retreated to a secret place to train. Do you have a place where you can train without being watched?
Rafael Nadal:
Perhaps there is such a place but I haven’t looked for it yet. I’m always happy when I’m at home in Mallorca, it’s my favorite place to train. I feel well there although, in the summer, we get a lot of tourists and many of them want to watch during the training sessions.

Q: Would you prefer a bit more privacy at home?
Nadal:
No, it’s alright. I don’t need to hide myself, not when I’m training either. Sometimes, it gets a bit crazy and it can turn into a bit of a show when I’m at tournaments. In Rome here as well, so many people came to watch every training session. But, it doesn’t bother me, I can still concentrate through that all.

Q: Do you like to be alone at times? Do you still have those moments by yourself at all?
Nadal:
Those moments are rare, that’s true. However, I actually don’t really like being alone all that much. I always need people around me and I’m pleased when my friends are there because that means that we can enjoy ourselves together and have long battles at Playstation. Playing that on my own is really not much fun for me.

Q: You’re always surrounded by a huge crowd of fans. Have you ever collected autographs yourself?
Nadal:
I’ve had a lot of opportunities of doing so, because my uncle played football for Barcelona and Mallorca. But I’ve never asked them. I was simply too shy. But I would have been very happy if somebody would take the time to give me an autograph, I always try doing that, to give as many autographs as possible.

Q: We always see you being friendly and polite. Are you sometimes really angry/annoyed?
Nadal.
Of course, often even and I tend to shout then at times but of course, not to people who come to ask for an autograph or a picture. It’s not their fault that I’m in a bad mood. But if I have a bit of time, it goes away quickly. I’m never angry for a long time.

Q: What angers/annoys you then?
Nadal:
(laughs): Well, for example, when I have a lot of appointments with the press so that I have to wait longer than expected to eat.

Q: Does the financial crisis annoy you perhaps?
Nadal:
I follow the news about it of course. It’s incredible and somehow, everybody is affected by it, directly or indirectly. Everybody is worried about it, me too. The experts say that it’s the worst crisis in history and that things will improve in a few years.

Q: Do you know where your money is placed?
Nadal:
I don’t know the details of it, my father takes care of it all. He knows it better than I do. In fact, I’m no risk taker because you never know. The world is going crazy right now, but I hope that my money is place well.

Q: Where do you find relaxation? You seem to be a typical islander.
Nadal:
Well, I obviously know everything about the Balearic Islands. (laughs) But it’s true, I like islands. For example, I’ve already been to Sicily and the Canary Islands. I simply love the sea and I love fishing very much.

Q: How heavy was the biggest fish you ever caught?
Nadal:
17 kilo.

Q: Seriously? Or is that typical fisher’s talk? You know, they love to exaggerate…
Nadal:
No, I’m not cheating (laughs). Really, it was 17 kilo. I took it to a restaurant and they prepared it for us. It was really good.

Q: You don’t only fish. You also love to play golf. Do you play with your left hand?
Nadal:
No, I use my right hand. I do everything right-handed, except playing tennis.

Q: What’s your handicap?
Nadal:
Nine. It have a lot of fun doing it and I hope that I will be able to play again on Monday in Mallorca. This is relaxation for me. Otherwise, I would rest on the sofa at home but often, I sleep throughout half the afternoon and suddenly, it’s already dark outside. It often amazes me and I think to myself: I only slept for one hour, didn’t I? It can’t be…

Q: Did you already congratulate Roger Federer on becoming a father in the summer?
Nadal:
Of course, I already did so at the Indian Wells masters. He’s very happy and I’m really happy for him. I want to start a family as well one day but I still have time.

Petra Philippsen for Eurosport.

ATP
