Secret to beating Nadal on clay yet to be found
by Matt Cronin, Special to FOXSports.com
Updated: April 20, 2009, 6:33 PM EST

Novak Djokovic was fired up after winning the second set from Rafael Nadal in the Monte Carlo final. The contest was knotted at a set apiece, and the Serbian's groundstrokes had depth and meaning. For a few moments, it was Djokovic who was doing the pushing and pulling.

But on the Spaniard's beloved red clay, it's Nadal who usually wins super heavyweight tug of wars, because he knows his opponents have to be able to hang with him until the last ball is struck. And over the past five years, no one has shown that they have the legs, the stamina or the heart to grapple with him on clay. That's why the multi-talented Djokovic went down 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, just like dozens of others have before him.

"He's got the psychological edge where everyone knows that he's Rafael Nadal, and he's already up a set and break before he walks on the court," said sports psychologist Allen Fox, author of "The Winner's Mind" and a former touring pro. "You know he's never going to quit, and it's a nasty prospect."

After winning his fifth consecutive Monte Carlo crown, the left-handed Nadal ran his clay court record in finals to 23-1, which makes the 22-year-old — to state the extremely obvious — a gigantic favorite to win every clay-court tournament he enters, including Barcelona this week, Masters Series titles in Rome and Madrid during the first two weeks of May and, of course, his fifth consecutive French Open.

One of the reasons he's an overwhelming favorite is that Nadal continues to win on clay — and most other surfaces — even when he's not at the very top of his game. He plays a nearly error-free type of game, where his defense is almost always airtight and his offense borders on spectacular.

His uncle and coach, Toni, said that after his nephew put down his two nearest competitors of the season — Andy Murray and Djokovic — at Monte Carlo, Rafa was missing a bit of confidence and his serve was way off.

Still, Nadal bullied his foes when necessary, because they can't figure out a way to get the ball past him when he's comfortably sliding and sticking his groundstrokes.

"Nadal has a throwback head to the old guys. Jimmy Connors was probably the last of the bunch, where he went after every point," said Fox, who also coaches world No. 38 Igor Kunitsyn. "Nadal makes every single point painful, regardless of the score. That pays off. On clay, the balance of power shifts toward the ability to grind the guy down mentally because you can't blow Nadal out. Now you are getting into a brawl, and he's the best brawler around."

There don't seem to be too many competitors around who relish the prospect of facing Nadal on clay — even his countrymen, who grew up on the surface like Nadal.

Nadal's Davis Cup teammate, Feliciano Lopez, told Diaro Sport that his friend simply doesn't check out.

"He's very ambitious and has demonstrated that he wants it more every day," Lopez said. "In spite of everything that he's already achieved, he still has the same attitude and desire."

Two-time French Open finalist Alex Corretja, who is now helping coach Murray, believes that no player is better at staying in the moment than Nadal, who doesn't even understand the meaning of resting on one's laurels.

"Everything that he's obtained no longer satisfies him, and because it doesn't, what he seeks is to repeat and to win again," Corretja said. "That makes him the greatest one."

Another one of Nadal's Davis Cup teammates, Tommy Robredo, thinks Nadal is human and will have a bad day eventually — but also added that to beat him, a player has to play perfectly.

"Physically, there is no way to get at him," Fox said. "The way he's beatable, if at all, is to attack into the forehand, because that can come up short, and then maybe take advantage of the other side and come in. Getting him wide of the forehand is the best play — but from there, it depends on what you've got to be able to finish the point. If it's down to where you beat a guy physically, a guy can have an off day where he's just missing, but on clay, it invariably comes down to the mental aspect. Everyone can keep the ball in court, but Nadal isn't going to have a bad day mentally."

There are two schools of thought as to how to tackle the Spaniard on clay. One is play far back in the court in the style of a backboard and force him to go on offense. Another is to attempt to rip winners and climb all over the net. Neither has worked since Nadal won his first Roland Garros crown in 2005. He has answers for anything and everything.

"Physically, you can't depend on hitting big shots every day, but mentally, you can have a good day every day as he does," Fox said. "Players aren't going to be mentally stronger than he is. If you can't blow him out, it's going to come down to a mental brawl, and he's not going to have an off day that way. If you try to play steady with him, then you are sure to get into the brawling, and no one can concentrate as long as he can."

Fox believes that attacking the Spaniard is the only solution. No. 2 Roger Federer has tried that for portions of his matches against Nadal at the French Open during the past four years. But he has failed to pull off a victory because Nadal passes like a demon. Djokovic found out the same at Monte Carlo, as he converted less than 50 percent of his net rushes.

Fox said that in his long career counseling athletes, he's discovered they run into problems that are insolvable at times. So he tells them to pick the best of the worst solutions. Maybe, just maybe, a modern player will zone in, like Adriano Panatta did against six-time French Open champion Bjorn Borg at Roland Garros, attacking at all costs and taking the cool Swede out of his rhythm.

"I can't see there's a strategy where you have the edge over Nadal on clay," Fox said. "They are all losing strategies, but you have to choose the best shot that you have, which is to attack rather than just stay back and trade body punches, which is even worse.

"Federer can get him, but his problem is that when Nadal hits his first shot into Federer's backhand, Federer has nowhere to hit the ball where it's any good. If you try and just play into Nadal's backhand, he eventually runs around and hits the forehand where he likes it, which is inside out, and then you're in trouble. And if you get it to his backhand, nothing good happens anyway, so the only chance is to get it to his forehand and try to open up the court."

Nadal recently said that in two-out-of-three-set matches, the top players are more vulnerable because a player can get scorching hot with his serve or favorite groundstroke and pull off an upset before the better man can dig in. But at the Grand Slams, that's almost impossible, as in three-out-of-five sets, the hot player tends to cool off a bit and the more established player usually finds his way into a match.

That's why Nadal and Federer have combined to win 19 out of the last 21 Grand Slams, with only Djokovic and Marat Safin battling their ways to major titles during this period of Spanish and Swiss domination.

"Everyone only has so much mental strength, but in three-out-of-five, you know you have to concentrate for up to five hours rather than two or three," Fox said. "It's so much tougher, and it's going to come down to who has the staying power upstairs."

Fox and every player on tour concede that it's Nadal who has the most willpower these days. When he arrives in Paris in late May with the intention of pocketing his fifth crown, Nadal will surely be thinking that he has all the solutions and it's up to the rest of the field to find a magic formula that might confuse him.

"You have to attack him somehow," Fox said. "The way I've seen it done best is like Murray does from time to time. If you have a really good backhand, you can hurt him badly on the forehand side. It's tougher on clay, but the alternative is to fight the shark in the water. Maybe he can be upset by playing steady, but I've never seen it done and I can't see how it would be done."

"I need to play better if I want to keep winning", says Nadal

Barcelona (Spain) - Following the comments of his uncle and coach, Toni, world #1 Rafael Nadal said this Wednesday, just after defeat Portuguese Frederico Gil in his debut on ATP 500 Barcelona, that he needs to be more regular if he wants to keep in route to another 5th title in a row. Last Monday, the Spaniard's coach said the he hasn't showed his best tennis on Monte Carlo and he needed to improve

"It was an okay match. It was important to win this first match after arriving Sunday from Monte Carlo. Gil has already gave me trouble on Miami. Today (Wed), in the other hand, he offered less resistance" assured the "King of Clay", that had defeated the Portuguese fighter in the fast courts in Miami by 7/5 and 6/3. In Barcelona, he got only four games in two sets.

"I still don't know who I'll play next, but anyway I need to play better than I did today otherwise I may be hard to go ahead. The most important for me now is not the opponent, but for me to raise my level of game to the most" completed the four times champion, that in the next round will play the winner between Richard Gasquet and Chistophe Rochus.

In the last week, Nadal opened his season on clay with the Monte Carlo title, but what was commented to most was the lack of brilliance in the second set of his semifinal against Andy Murray and in the first two sets of the final against Novak Djokovic. Though he was happy for the victory, Toni Nadal said that his pupil's serve was "incredibly weak" and that his confidence wasn't high"

Nadal Begins Barcelona Drive For Five
By Tennis Week

Shakira was in the house the last time Rafael Nadal and Frederico Gil met in a match that saw the World No. 1 compelled to playing catch up.

In today's rematch, Nadal turned the rallies on the red clay court into a stage for a tennis version of musical chairs: he pushed the 75th-ranked Portuguese player around and around and when the sound stopped Gil was the odd man out.

The top-seeded Nadal converted four of seven break points to ground Gil, 6-2, 6-2, and advance to the round of 16 at the Barcelona Open.

It was the 22nd consecutive clay-court victory for Nadal, who won his fifth straight Monte Carlo Masters championship on Sunday when he beat Novak Djokovic in three sets. Nadal has posted a 139-4 record on clay since 2005.

Continuing his quest for a fifth consecutive Barcelona crown, Nadal will play Christophe Rochus in the round of 16. Rochus upended 13th-seeded Richard Gasquet, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-3. Nadal obliterated Rochus, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, in their lone meeting in the opening round of the Australian Open in January.

Nadal raised his Barcelona record to 22-1 and his season record to 30-3 with the losses coming to Gael Monfils (in Doha), Andy Murray (in Rotterdam) and Juan Martin del Potro (in Miami).

It was in Miami at the Sony Ericsson Open that Gil broke Nadal early to press the Spaniard before Nadal responded with a 7-5, 6-3, victory. This time around, Nadal broke serve in the third game of the opening set and never looked back.

"In Miami I played pretty badly against him," said Nadal. "Today I played a more serious match, without making any big changes. Last time we played I felt he could have won a set, but not today. Of course because I stayed focus. He's fighter and you need to be concentrated all the time in order to not let him get into the match and win a set. First rounds are always difficult because you need to adjust to the new conditions. It was a relatively comfortable match and I’m happy to have won without suffering too much."

Chairman Phillips praises world number one

Last updated: 22nd April 2009

Wimbledon club chairman Tim Phillips has paid tribute to Rafael Nadal for transferring his clay-court skills to the grass so successfully.

For years, players brought up on the clay performed poorly at Wimbledon, or failed to turn up at all, but the world number one proved what can be done by winning his first title at SW19 last year.

And Phillips said that this year's boost in prize money that will see the winner pick up Ј850,000 - an increase of Ј100,000 on 2008 - is in no small part down to the Spaniard.

"It reflects enormous credit on Rafa," he said. "One or two others have tended to cop out. They have got disproportionate points on clay and regarded grass as an inconvenience.

"He's shown if you can play on clay you can play on anything. I really take my hat off to him. The game at the moment is blessed with some of the ambassadors it has."

Surest Sign of Spring is Rafael Nadal
By Tim Joyce

It's become the surest thing, the most consistent sight, the most reliable entity in all of contemporary sports, even replacing baseball as the indicator of the vernal season's arrival. That is - I mean he is - of course, Rafael Nadal.

The Mallorcan southpaw triumphed in Monte Carlo, the traditional start of the European clay court campaign, for a fifth straight year last week. And this week in Barcelona - albeit in a tournament with far less historical significance - he is about to duplicate that same feat. And unless the unthinkable occurs he will be covered in red dirt from his customary, Bjorn Borg-like descent to the ground upon winning a fifth consecutive title at Roland Garros on June 7th - just four days after turning 23. Consider this - Roger Federer didn't collect his first Grand Slam title until just before his 22nd birthday. Nadal has already accumulated six and the expected triumph in Paris would make it seven.

Now, it's easy to think too far ahead and it is possible, remote but still possible, that the rapidly improving Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic could present significant hurdles for Rafa at the French Open. But the preternaturally talented Nadal has been clear in his desire to always keep improving and never stand still. And it's obvious this isn't just talk. He has truly become the all-court threat in the sport as his triumphs at Wimbledon last year and in Australia in January attest. And in recent days the Spaniard as spoken of his need to serve better if he is indeed to win in Paris. And just think, one can go back just a year or two ago and read many articles and comments by tennis experts who were unyielding and downright acerbic in their contentions that Nadal would always remain a clay court specialist. How wrong they were. But Nadal need not gloat as that would be vastly out of character.

Rarely has there been a champion in any sport so devoted and coach-able. Nadal has been extremely fortuitous to have been nurtured in a quiet environment where he was surrounded by family and the only coach he has ever employed is his uncle Toni. Rather unusual for tennis champions. This has had a profound effect on Nadal and has enabled him to maintain calm during matches, never more exemplified than during his remarkable 5th set at Wimbledon last summer. He has so far been able to avoid the stubbornness that is a frequent companion of so many great champions. Often times talent and genius can be overcome by contumacy, especially later in one's career. Can anyone say Federer, who desperately is in need of on-court counsel at this crucial stage of his illustrious career, especially as he seeks to tie and surpass Pete Sampras' record of 14 Slam titles.

Tennis dominance is short lived, the epitome of compressed greatness. Compared to golf where a great player can be at the top of the sport for upwards of two decades, a tennis player's prime is usually reached by 25 or 26 and the fall-off afterwards can be immediate and proceed at a breakneck pace. And to witness Nadal becoming the dominating figure in the sport following Federer's four year reign is nothing short of remarkable. After all we've experienced back-to-back "greatest of all time" candidates with Californian Pete Sampras and Federer. I'd hesitate to put Nadal in that company just yet, but as he closes in on ten Slams he may well belong in that elite company. It's hard to think of an example in another sport where this type of debate could occur in a handing-of-the-baton fashion over three consecutive eras.

And though he is only 22, there's always the chance that he could peak in the next year or two. There's no way to judge how much of a toll his knees have taken these last few years as his brand of tennis is more liable to physical breakdown than Sampras' or Federer's games. But all three possess that rarest of combinations - artistry and power. So it's imperative to appreciate his precocity now. Though tennis still isn't front-and-center for most sports fans, the sport couldn't be in better hands. It is must-see viewing whenever Rafa takes the court. Just the way it was for Federer and Sampras before him.

Nadal advances to 5th straight Barcelona final
4/25/2009 9:29:00 AM

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Rafael Nadal defeated Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-2 Saturday to reach his fifth straight Barcelona Open final and win his 24th straight match on clay.

The top-ranked Spaniard will take on either countryman David Ferrer or Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, who played later Saturday.

Nadal, who is the four-time defending champion, has not dropped his serve throughout the tournament and saved all six of Davydenko's break points in windy conditions.

Davydenko had too many unforced errors, often sending his backhand wide.

Nadal saved three break points in the first set and broke the ninth-ranked Russian twice.

In the second, Nadal broke to lead 3-1 and saved three more break points in the next game as Davydenko went on the offensive. The ninth-ranked Russian wasted the first chance by hitting crosscourt backhand wide, then watched Nadal slice a perfect crosscourt shot on the line to save the second before Davydenko hit wide again.

Nadal ended the match with a passing shot down the line. The Spaniard evened his head-to-head record to 3-3 against Davydenko, with Nadal winning all three matches on clay.

Nadal had a rest day Friday after quarterfinal opponent David Nalbandian withdrew ahead of the match with a right hip injury.

Who wants another old-fashion Nadal whippin'?

Friday, April 24, 2009

Posted by Peter Bodo, TENNIS.com

One of the more compelling questions raised by Rafael Nadal's emergence as an all-court Grand Slam champion in late 2008 and early 2009 was: Just how often does this kid have to win Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and Paris before he looks at the red-clay lineup of tournaments, shrugs, and says, "Been there, done that. Think I'll go trekking in the Alps this May, or maybe take a six-week surfing vacation in Hawaii."

Apparently, the answer is "at least five times." Nadal won Monte Carlo for the fifth straight year, and is threatening to do the same at Barcelona. David Nalbandian, penciled in as Nadal's quarterfinal opponent, pulled out of Barcelona with a bum hip. Far be it for me to question Nalbandian's integrity, but really, why should he -- or anyone else -- go out there when they know they're just going to get an old-fashioned whipping at the hands of this 22-year-old clay-court demon?

Twenty-two is a pretty young age to claim you're the greatest ever, at anything, unless you're a gymnast or professional ice-skater. And while Nadal has not made that claim, his record on that score is pretty persuasive. Just contemplate some of these numbers:

Nadal's career record on clay is 166-14, but that includes 10 losses incurred before> 2005 -- in other words, back when he probably was still reading "Captain Underpants" books and watching "Thomas the Tank Engine" videos. Since the start of 2005, he's 139-4. The Fab Four who own wins over him in that period are: Gaston Gaudio, Igor Andreev, Roger Federer and Juan Carlos Ferrero. The win must have been cold comfort for Ferrero, because he's the Spanish guy everyone immediately forgot when Nadal emerged on the scene.

So far, Nadal has bagged 23 clay-court titles; that's as many titles as former world No. 1 Jim Courier won during his entire career -- on all surfaces. That figure includes Nadal's four consecutive French Open titles. In fact, Nadal is unbeaten at Roland Garros -- and could remain so for the next, oh, five or seven years.

Nadal has absorbed just three losses against members of the current top 25: Federer, David Ferrer and Fernando Gonzalez. You can bet that the eight members of that distinguished group who have yet to play Nadal on clay aren't exactly elbowing each other out of the way to get at Nadal. The most extraordinary element in Nadal's history on clay is his ability to sustain that through-the-roof level of play. And any suspicions that, with the Wimbledon and Australian Open titles in hand, he'd ease up or find it hard to get motivated for another clay-court season have been pretty much blown out of the water.

This inability to slow down, lose interest or rest on his laurels is a key to understanding Nadal, and it points to some of his extraordinary virtues as a competitor. Chief among these is his sheer love of tennis combat. If he were just a gifted title-bagger, or a young athlete hell-bent on achieving fame and fortune, it's unlikely that he'd be playing this clay-court season as if it were his first.

No player in our era has shown such a profound and simple love of competition, and it's that devotion to the process that has enabled Nadal to transcend the stereotype of a "clay-court specialist."

In the end, as much as he loves the clay, it isn't about the clay. The roots of Nadal's success are far, far below the surface.

Nadal Eyes Five In Barcelona
By Tennis Week
Saturday, April 25, 2009

Sunday in Barcelona will see another all-Spanish final.

David Ferrer fought his way into the final and Rafael Nadal didn't need a watershed of winners to continue his dirt dominance.

The top-seeded Nadal moved to within one win of collecting his fifth consecutive Barcelona Open title with today's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nikolay Davydenko. Ferrer fought off Fernando Gonzalez 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) and will face Nadal in a rematch of the 2008 final, which Nadal won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, to take a 6-3 lead in their head-to-head series.

Ferrer beat Nadal in their first-ever meeting on clay at the 2004 Stuttgart event. Since that setback, Nadal is 5-0 on clay against his Davis Cup teammate.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, it's an excellent start to the clay season," said Nadal, whose three losses this season have come to Gael Monfils, Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro. "I'm enjoying the best moment of my career this past year and I have to appreciate that and feel happy about it."

Nadal posted his 23rd consecutive win in Barcelona, raising his record to 24-1 in this event. His only loss came to compatriot Alex Corretja in the second round in 2003, when he made his tournament debut at age 16.

The World No. 1 had the day off on Friday as scheduled quarterfinal opponent David Nalbandian withdrew with an inflammed right hip. Dominating Davydenko, who was coming off a two hour, 18-minute quarterfinal conquest of ninth-seeded Radek Stepanek, Nadal evened his head-to-head series with the Russian at 3-3.

Nadal raised his record to 31-3 on the season and is bidding for his fourth tournament title of the year after collecting championships at the Australian Open and Masters Series shields in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo. It was the 24th straight clay-court win for Nadal, whose last loss on clay came to countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in thesecond round of Rome on May 7, 2008 — a match Nadal played despite blisters on both feet.

The fifth-seeded Gonzalez, who edged No. 2 seed Fernando Verdasco, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in Friday's quarterfinals, did not face a break point in racing out to a 5-1 lead today. The Chilean crushed a series of forehands to collect the opening set.

Ferrer found his footing in the second set, working the angles and moving the bigger man around the court in opening up a 3-0 second-set lead. Ferrer served 71 percent in the second set and won 17 of 21 points played on his second serve.

The fourth-seeded Ferrer broke for a 3-1 lead in the decisive set when Gonzalez sprayed a forehand wide prompting a disgusted Gonzalez to snap his racquet in a rage. Calming down after cracking up, Gonzalez broke back in the ninth game to force the tie break.

"There were lot of nerves, it was really tense," Ferrer said. "I'm in the final, I'll fight to the end and see what happens."

Four of the top five seeds contested the final four for the first time in Barcelona since 1977.
