РАФАЭЛЬ НАДАЛЬ БАЛЛОТИРУЕТСЯ В КОНГРЕСС!

RAFAEL NADAL FOR CONGRESS!
Posted on Wednesday, April 8, 2009

At last! GOTOTENNIS scores an exclusive interview with RAFAEL NADAL!

Okay, okay, here’s the full story: The LA Times reported yesterday that Rafael Nadal is running for Congress. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the candidate isn’t Rafa “Vamos” Nadal, but a gentleman named Rafael F. Nadal, a businessman from Rosemead, California. He’s running for the 32nd Congressional District seat that was vacated when former Rep. Hilda L. Solis (D-El Monte) stepped down to became secretary of Labor for the Obama administration.

Mr. Nadal (pictured above, in his tennis prime) was kind enough to talk to me via email about his connection to the “other” tennis-playing Rafael Nadal:

Of course I know of Rafael, the Nadal. The root where I came in immigrated from Spain, to the Dominican Republic. I will be willing to bet that there is a family connection between us. Nadal is a relatively small family outside Spain, where we came from.

As for Rafael, the tennis great, I have narrowed it to telling people, ‘oh, that is my nephew’ and people love that. If I say something else, they seem disappointed - I wish to keep them happy.

As for things we share in common, I too played tennis once (see the picture from my younger years.) I used to wear my hair long, like my nephew. (LOL)

Maybe someday before I finish with running for Congress, I can meet Rafael, and have a photo with him (laugh.) And share with him how much extra conversation he has caused me from California to Mexico, trying to tell folks that there is no connection.

Rafael Nadal, the politician

Nadal aims to spark clay domination in Monte Carlo
Agence France-Presse - 4/12/2009

Rafael Nadal begins his annual quest for another season of total clay-court domination at the Monte Carlo Open which starts here on Sunday.

The Spaniard is joined by wild card entry Roger Federer in what is a high-stakes start on the road to the French Open at Roland Garros.

Nadal, who has beaten Federer for the title in the principality in the last three seasons, will be bidding for his fifth trophy in a row at the iconic Country Club venue overlooking the Mediterranean.

Federer, still without a title in 2009, made a late entry after weighing his options following a semi-final loss last week on harcourt at the Miami Masters to Novak Djokovic.

The Swiss had opted to play a reduced clay calendar prior to the May 25 start in Paris, but will now go into battle at an event beloved by many European players. After limited success this season, the number 2 likely decided that he needed more court time.

Nadal is hoping for a recovery of sorts after a quarter-final in Miami, beaten by Argentine Juan Del Potro. The 22-year-old who tops the ATP rankings dropped hints that he may be re-thinking a rigorous schedule which takes him to four events in five weeks before the French Open.

But whatever he decides, getting away quickly in Monte Carlo will be a confidence boost to the player who trails Briton Andy Murray two titles to three this season.

"I am excited to start to play on clay, trying to play good matches again," Nadal said before leaving the US.

"I have to be 100 percent ready mentally and physically," added Nadal after Monte Carlo is set to move on to Barcelona, Rome and then possibly Madrid.

Federer will need to quickly get his feet dirty on the surface which could shape up as the salvation to his early season.

The top eight seeds - Djokovic stands third, Murray fourth and Del Potro fifth - all benefit from opening-round byes, with Nadal to play the winner from Russian Igor Kunistyn and Juan Chela.

Federer will face either Jurgen Melzer or Andreas Seppi in the second round and could run into Davis Cup teammate and 13th seed Stan Wawrinka in the third round.

Murray takes perhaps the most form into the clay season after lifting wins at Doha, Rotterdam (over Nadal) and Miami. The Scot starts against either Romanian Victor Hanescu or a qualifier.

Former number 1 players Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin were drawn into a tasty first-round clash, with the Australian ranked 88th receiving a wild card entry as he recovers from hip surgery.

Safin, a crowd-pleaser around the world, insists he's playing in his final season.

Sixth seed Gilles Simon leads the French assault, heading up number 9 compatriot Gael Monfils. Richard Gasquet, a semi-finalist four years ago against Nadal, is out with a shoulder injury.

Rafael Nadal feeling 'no pressure' as clay-court season starts in Monte Carlo

World number one Rafael Nadal says his impressive start to the year has left him feeling relaxed as the clay-court season gets underway in Monte Carlo.

The Spaniard, who lifted his maiden Australian Open title in January and will aim to win his fifth consecutive title at the French tournament, begins his clay-court campaign against Argentine Juan Chela.

Dubbed 'the King of Clay', when asked if he felt any pressure, Nadal said: "No. Maybe less than ever because I won in Australia and I won in Indian Wells

"I started this year better than ever. That gives me more calm than previous years."

Looking forward to playing on a different surface the 22-year-old, who has a 4-1 record against Chela, said that however relaxed he felt he would not underestimate his opponent.

"Coming back on clay is always special [but] Chela is a good clay-court player and I have to play good tennis if I want to have good chances to win.

"[I need to] try to play aggressive without a lot of mistakes."

The winner of eight Masters titles on clay in the last four years said that even at his advanced level, re-adjustment was something he had to deal with every year.

"In the last years I had very good results on clay," he said. "But I only play three, four tournaments every year on it.

"The rest of the year I play on hard. It's always a change to adapt to clay, I need some days. If I find my best performance I’m gonna have chances to have good results.

"I am excited to start to play on clay, trying to play good matches again [but] I have to be 100 per cent ready mentally and physically."

Meanwhile, newlywed Roger Federer opens his campaign against Andreas Seppi from Italy who beat Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-2, 6-0 in his first round match.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion only accepted a last-minute wild card entry to the competition last Thursday and will be looking to avenge Nadal who has beaten him in the final for the last three years.

Having struggled to find his form since losing his status as world number one, Federer also lost the Australian Open final to Nadal at the start of the year.

An interview with:

RAFAEL NADAL

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Not much time to rest since Miami. How do you feel? You were seemingly very tired after Miami. How do you feel now?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yeah, I think very well, no? I was coming back to, yeah, one of my favorite tournaments, if not the favorite. Is always a special place, playing in this tournament. The few days in Mallorca with the friends and family was really good for me.
I had some days off, and later some practice. Yeah, everything was perfect. And am very happy to be here. Everything perfect coming back to Monte Carlo.

Q. How quickly do you adapt? Clay is your best surface. Do you feel the first hour you hit very comfortable?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No, no. Sure no. Clay, yeah, the last years I had very good results on clay. But I only play three, four tournaments every year, no? So the rest of the year I play on hard. So always is a change to adapt to clay. I need some days.

Q. What is the most difficult part of adapting to clay?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Everything, no? I think the movement is important. The slide another time. Sure, the strategy, no? You have to play with more control, playing more inside, more outside, of course. You have to move more inside and outside. You have to play more angles. Everything change, no?
But the important thing is have some matches, no? When you have some matches, you have your routine.

Q. Does the movement, sliding, come naturally to you again?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No, no. I told you, no? Is important thing, slide another time, everything. The movement is the tougher thing, no? I think to play good on clay, you have to move well. If you don't slide, is very difficult.

Q. What do you remember of the match you played against Albert Costa here many years ago?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yeah, it was one of my big first wins, no? So, yeah, was a really nice memory, no? This tournament always was special for me and I think for everybody, no, because is historic tournament. Best players of the history played here and won here. So always come back to here in this city, this important city in the world.
Yeah, I think very important and very nice for the players, and that's important for the tennis, have one big tournament here.

Q. You're playing Chela after tomorrow. What can you say about him?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Chela is a good clay court player. I have to play good tennis if I want to have chances to win. That's what I gonna try, no? Gonna try to play aggressive without having a lot of mistakes, because he not gonna have mistakes. That's what I have to try.

Q. Are you still planning to play four clay events in five weeks or are you now thinking about Madrid?
RAFAEL NADAL:
You never know, no? You never know. Always depends of the results. But, no, my normal schedule is these four. But you never know what's going on.

Q. Is it special for you coming here being No. 1 in the world on your best surface? Is it different?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Is the same like last year. Every year is the same, no? Always come back to clay is special. I told 100 times, no, for me doesn't matter be No. 1, No. 2. I am not more happy right now than the last year coming here be No. 1 or be No. 2. I no thinking about all the day if I No. 1 or No. 3, no?
I think about play my best tennis, try to play my tennis here on clay. If I find my best performance I gonna have chances to have good results. The goals, be No. 1, be No. 2 are the same.

Q. Do you feel a lot of pressure when the clay court season starts?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No. Maybe less than ever because I won in Australia, I won in Indian Wells. I started the season better than ever. That's give me more calm than the last years, no?
In the end, the mistake is thinking you have to repeat the same like last four years, no? But I never thought about that, no one year, to repeat like the year before.
So for me the only important thing is think about first round. I am thinking about the match against Chela. Hope to play well. That's what I think. You start to think you have to defend, the pressure, you have to repeat the year, is impossible to play like this, no?
I am No. 1 on the race now. One thousand points difference between Murray and me. That's the important thing for me. I looking at that. I never arrive to the clay season with this difference. I have to try to play my best tennis.

Q. In your idea, between Djokovic and Murray, which one is stronger on clay, have more things on clay?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Last few years was Djokovic because he won in Rome, semifinals here, semifinals Hamburg, semifinals Roland Garros two years.

Q. What about in your idea?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I don't know. I don't know. We have to see because Murray didn't arrive to the clay season with this level, no, playing like this. So I am sure Murray gonna play good on clay.

Q. For the last three or four years, Roger Federer has been the closest player to you on clay. Do you expect him to do the same this year?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I would love, yeah.

Q. But you think he would be closer than anyone else?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I don't know if I gonna be the first one. I don't know that, so I can't know if Roger gonna be the closer to me. Maybe he gonna be better than me. You never know that.

Q. Do you think there is a problem for Roger Federer during the first part of the year? We saw him crying. He broke a racquet. Do you think there is a problem with him?
RAFAEL NADAL:
A semifinal, two semifinals in Masters Series is very good results.
But I think doesn't matter if he break a racquet in Miami. I think everybody talks about this. But in the end is only a thing, small thing. A lot of people broke a lot of racquets on the tennis court, no? So one time doesn't matter.
I am sure he's confident to start another year the clay court season and I think he start the season very well. The only thing is he didn't win a title, but the results are very good.

Q. Did you call him to send your congratulations for his marriage?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No. I congratulate him because he gonna be a father. But for that not yet. For true, I didn't know. I know yesterday.

Q. Do you remember when you broke a racquet yourself last time? Have you by any chance also gotten married the last weekend?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I never broke a racquet. That's the first thing. You never know in the future. Hopefully not.
And, yes, I am thinking about that, be married and be father right now for the next years (smiling).

Вот незабываемое интервью с "My body is perfect, no?" перевели же как :"Разве мое тело не совершенно???" И сколько обсуждений сразу же зато!!!

R. NADAL/J. Chela
6-2, 6-3

An interview with: RAFAEL NADAL

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What happened when you lost 11 points in a row in the first set?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yeah, well, I understand the match very well. I play some game wells. I did some terrible games. In the beginning of the second, after two games, really bad. Yeah, up and down during all the match.
Yeah, I have to improve the concentration in the next match. That's the important thing.

Q. Is it just a matter of not having played on clay or not having played a match in a while?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I don't know. I don't know. You can think (smiling). I don't know.

Q. Do you think people maybe expect you to always be perfect?
RAFAEL NADAL:
No. I think I never thought I am perfect. I think the people think the same as me, I'm not perfect.
I won anyway. I won 6 2, 6 3 against Chela. He's really not a bad player on clay. Is a good start because I was all the time in front on the score.
Yeah, I think was a comfortable win. Anyway, I have some tough moments during the match. But, no, in the end wasn't the moments where I was scared for the victory, no?

Q. You don't play anymore with the straps on the knees?
RAFAEL NADAL:
You never know. Maybe tomorrow I gonna put another time. We think about to take out for a while. We gonna see what's happen. So for the moment it's okay. So I happy for that.

Q. Do you remember when it was when you played without them the last time?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Yeah, I think last year here I played without against Ferrer. And before I don't know. One year.

Q. Does it make a difference?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I don't know. I have to try more matches than one, no?

Q. How important is it for you to set the tone here in Monte Carlo for the rest of the clay court season?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Every tournament is completely different, no? So sure the important thing is the tournament. I think, sure, is important to try to start well, to have the confidence for the rest of the clay season. But the important thing is the tournament. Is really important tournament for me. Monte Carlo is historic tournament. I would like to play good tennis and have a good result here.
But if not, I gonna go to maybe Barcelona next week and try my best another time, so...

Q. How do you explain this lapse in concentration in this match?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I said one question ago, I don't know. Yeah, I played some up and down during all the match. Sometimes happen something like this. Trying to don't repeat for next match.

Q. What is your opinion on Murray's game on clay? What do you think he can do on clay?
RAFAEL NADAL:
I didn't see him yesterday. But, anyway, when one player have good results on the rest of the surfaces, he's gonna do very good results on clay, too. No question about that.

Q. Could you speak about your training routine off the court. What kind of things do you do? Do you do cycling or running?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Today?

Q. No. Off the court when you're training, what is your sports training routine?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Not much. No, not a lot of things. I run enough on court. Outside sometimes I do some bicycle. But not a lot of things, yeah.

Toni Nadal: "I think Federer has made the right decision"

By Audrey Riou, Thursday 16 April 2009

The rain still falling on the rock, a little distraction is key with this great interview with the uncle / coach Toni Nadal. An interview for our file GrandChelem 12.

First witness of this case "All coaches? "Toni Nadal has the distinction of being not only the uncle of the current World number 1, but an educator seeking to transmit sensitive values beyond tennis. For GrandChelem, it gave us some keys to his work with his nephew, Rafael, and bounces off the controversy that surrounds Roger Federer, and his lack of coaching.

Toni, what is it for you a coach? What is this?
Today, everything is more difficult, it seems to me that the world has become more complicated and everything must be perfect. All small details help us improve on our goals and I think this idea is based on a coach. Is someone who helps you to improve, but of course I have the old mentality and I think that the importance of a coach is relative.

As a coach, you prepare a method for Rafa?
I do not know if there is a special method, but in any case, I do not know. I think the most important thing is to believe in work, believe in what we do. In the end, if it works well, we can and things work well. This is fundamental, it is the only important thing.

But Toni, what qualities does it have to be a good coach? What are the keys?
For me, there is a mental issue. I like the psychological aspect and I work a lot with that.

So, talking about the key mental. This idea with you always ...

Since my childhood I worked in a concrete way, I always tried to make things simple and not complicate my life. I think I was rewarded. For me, the most important. I think it is difficult to specify and define all the work we did, but I can only say that the psychological work was very, very important. It's complicated to say more.

Might say that you are spiritual someone who may be an extraordinary force of inspiration?
The only thing that inspired me in my life is to do a good job. First, we must understand and know what you want to understand the game from that point, the second point is to find what can lead us to understand this game In this case, we talk tennis but it could equally extrapolate this approach to all other activities. Me as a coach-teacher what interests me is to understand the game Rafael.

Can we speak of the principles that you sent your nephew or not?
Yes, we can say that I have based on the principles that I just explain. In fact, I taught him to understand the game then I have marked a path: the short and long term. If you play tennis to win the championship of the Balearic Islands, this is not the same as if we play tennis to become the number one world tennis. That is what I always wanted him to understand.

As a coach Rafa, how would you describe your relationship?

Our relationship is not like other coaches with their players. There was not a typical one is as parents. I have a vision of life and it is this particular vision that I have tried to show him and make him understand. Of course, sometimes we were in agreement and sometimes not, but it is clear that we does not have a normal relationship as coach and player. I am involved in the professional and personal lives of Rafael in a manner different from that of other coaches with their athletes. With a vision of life ... It's long ... We could talk about over twenty minutes, it is on! But I think that as uncle, I will strive to always give the best to Rafa and not just in sports but also personal. Rafa is a normal person. Like everyone else, he has a girlfriend, he has his parents, his friends, he suffers, he is happy. I taught him my vision of human relations.

The most important value that you've sent it?
At the level of tennis, the most important thing that I've told him to believe it at work, have respect for everything: people, equipment used, the other players. We must be grateful for life, that's fundamental.

You consider that Federer is still number one but what do you think of the fact that he did not coach?
It's perfect! I think it's important to have a coach during the training process of the player but if it is already performing, I do not think this is fundamental. I am pragmatic and I think Federer has always been managed as well. He made the right decision.

Finally, Toni, have you have a coach?
(He laughs a lot) No! Not at all! It would not be too logical (He laughs even more).

Nadal To Meet Ljubicic In Quarter-finals

Four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal cruised into the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters quarter-finals on Friday, knocking out former World No 6 Nicolas Lapentti – an Ecuadorian qualifier – 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 32 minutes. Nadal will now meet Monte-Carlo resident Ivan Ljubicic, a wild card entry from Croatia, later on Friday.

Rusty and inconsistent against Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in the opening-round match on Wednesday, Nadal produced a confident performance after a slow start against Lapentti to record his 24th straight win at the Monte-Carlo Country Club on a day when the sun was a welcome visitor. The pair began their match on Thursday evening, but it was carried over due to rain.

The ATP World Tour Champion is trying to become the first World No. 1 to win the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo since Ivan Lendl in 1988 (d. Jaite). On current form, Nadal will be difficult to stop during the European clay-court season.

The 22-year-old Nadal improved to 26-3 on the 2009 ATP World Tour season, highlighted by two titles at the Australian Open (d. Federer) and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells (d. Murray).

Lapentti, at 32 the oldest player in the singles draw, was appearing in the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters third round for the first time in eight visits. He was attempting to become only the second player (after Gaston Gaudio) to beat Nadal twice on clay-courts, having beaten the Spanish superstar at Bastad in July 2003. Lapentti dropped to 6-7 on the 2009 ATP World Tour season and 11-42 lifetime against Top 10 opponents.

World No. 66 Ivan Ljubicic set-up a quarter-final against Nadal, which will represent their first meeting since May 2006 at Roland Garros, following a 7-5, 7-6(2) win over Simone Bolelli of Italy in just under two hours. The 30-year-old Ljubicic also reached the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals in 2006 (l. to Gonzalez).

Ljubicic has never reached the final of an ATP World Tour clay-court tournament and is 8-12 lifetime in title-matches. He has a 10-8 match record this year and is 2-3 against Top 10 opponents. Last month he reached the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells quarter-finals (l. to Murray).
