Juan Martin del Potro flung his racquet high in the sky like a frisbee and hung his head in frustration as it splattered to the court behind him.

The sixth-seeded Argentine had watched a one-set, one break lead dissipate like drops of sweat vanshing and witnessed Rafael Nadal fight off three match points to force a final set tiebreaker and ratchet the intensity of this dramatic duel up several levels. The racquet, like del Potro's hopes, rose and seemed to crash suddenly.

Hurling his racquet as a form of stress relief, del Potro regained his composure then threw everything he had at the World No. 1.

In a tennis tug of war that saw both men compete with grit, del Potro delivered one of the most monumental wins of his young career, outlasting Nadal, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) to register his first career victory over a top-three player and advance to his first career Masters Series semifinal at the Sony Ericsson Open today.

Argentine fans, including Hall of Famer Gabriela Sabatini, traded cheers with Spanish fans creating a near Davis Cup-type atmosphere. The lanky 20-year-old from Tandil, Argentina will take on either fourth-seeded Scot Andy Murray or another left-handed Spaniard, eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, in Friday's semifinals.

In his post-match press conference, Nadal said his comeback to force the tie breaker was due to del Potro's level dropping rather than Nadal elevating his game. Nadal, who was faced with the challenge of trying to win the Sony Ericsson Open after claiming Indian Wells, ran into an opponent who forced him into defensive positions. You could call it a perfect storm; Nadal called it "an amazing disaster."

"I didn't come back very strong. He started to make mistakes," said Nadal, who has won ever Masters Series title except Miami and Cincinnati. "I think I played bad all the time. I think that's the truth of the match. I have the match lost. I was playing terrible (making) a lot of mistakes and later with the 3-0 (third-set lead) it was an amazing disaster."

The duel spanned three hours and in the end del Potro's willingness to take risk and drive his flatter strokes into the corners with authority was the difference.

Nadal had fought off five match points in defeating del Potro's Davis Cup teammate, David Nalbandian, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0, en route to winning Indian Wells last month.

Tennis' top trouble shooter was in the midst of yet another captivating comeback today.

Trailing 5-6 in the final set, Nadal summoned that familiar fighting spirit in saving three match points. He erased the first with a 124 mph ace out wide, won the second when del Potro whacked a forehand into net and reached back for his biggest serve of the match — a 131 mph missile — to fight off the third match point before eventually forcing the tie breaker. But that authoritative ball striking and willingness to step in the court and take the match to del Potro was lacking in the latter stages of the tie breaker.

When Nadal's backhand return collided with the top of the tape and fell over to give him a 3-2 lead in the breaker it seemed fortune favored the top-seeded Spaniard, who was just four points from yet another captivating comeback.

Del Potro, however, refused to yield. As Nadal grew oddly passive in his play, del Potro picked his spots to attack.

The six-time Grand Slam champion hit a poor drop shot then bungled a backhand pass down the line. On the 29th shot of the ensuing rally, del Potro pounded an inside-out forehand winner then followed a stinging forehand to net and stuck a fine forehand drop volley winner for 5-3. Playing defensive tennis and resorting to his slice backhand throughout the latter stages of the tie breaker, Nadal could not summon the aggression he showed in building a 3-0 third-set lead.

"You can say one thousand reasons (for the loss)," Nadal said. "I think he didn't play one of his best matches — that's what I feel. I don't know. I think he played well. His level is number seven of the world; he's very good. And I think he didn't play an unbelievable match and I didn't play on my level today."

Nadal missed a one-handed backhand to hand del Potro three match points and when the 2008 finalist flailed a forehand into the net, del Potro crossed himself and broke into a broad smile. Nadal, showing class in defeat, stopped to sign autographs for a group of kids before heading to the exit with his sights fixed firmly on the upcoming clay-court season.

"I usually do not lose a match with two breaks in the third. I did not play well in this tournament," Nadal said. "A little bit the first day, but I played bad all the time so in a way quarterfinals is a positive results I didn't adapt well to this tournament at this time. I am very happy to come back to clay and I will try to play good matches on clay."

третий вариант "всегда есть причина, но у каждого своя" - если Рафа подменил слово "individual" словом "personal", что тоже можно допустить, учитывая его неидеальное владение английским.

ПК Рафы очень честная. Сказал, что играл ужасно весь матч, что выигранный 2-й сет и 3-0 в 3-м - это не причина его хорошей игры, а спада у Дель Потро. Насчет "personal reasons" я понимаю так, что причины своей плохой игры, обилия ошибок он должен искать только в себе.

- Вы здесь, как всегда, фаворит. Заметили ли вы, что временами зрители болели не за вас? На трибунах было много аргентинских фанов.

- Нет, публика была замечательной. Очень хорошо, когда в теннисе присутствует такая поддержка зрителей. Иногда они были слишком шумными. Но в целом атмосфера была приятной.

- Это как-то на вас отразилось? Матч был захватывающим. Как вы себя чувствовали?

- Возможно для зрителей, но не для меня.

- Вы выиграли второй сет после проигрыша первого и играли очень сильно вплоть до двух брейков в третьем сете. Что произошло в тот момент?

- Нет, я не начал играть сильно, просто у Дель Потро появилось много ошибок. Я думаю, я играл плохо все время. Это правда.

Когда счет в третьей партии был 3-0, я начал играть еще хуже. Счет был 6-4 2-1, я играл ужасно. Позже у соперника появились ошибки, и я ими воспользовался. Но при счете 3-0 в третьем сете произошла катастрофа.

- Возможно, дело было в том, что я был недостаточно сфокусирован на игре. Действительно странно для меня проиграть матч на хардовых кортах, когда у меня было два брейка в третьем сете. - Тяжело морально, или…

- Сложно сказать. Возможно, да. Я очень удачно начал сезон. Очень много матчей я играл на предельной концентрации. Но последние два мачта таковыми не были. В любом случае мне бы хотелось поздравить Дель Потро. Он также начал сезон очень хорошо. Это отличная победа для него.

- Была ли сегодняшняя встреча похожа на матч Куба Дэвиса?

- Нет.

- Вы сделали 40 невынужденных ошибок, да и весь турнир выдался непонятным. Сделаете ли вы перерыв?

- Два-три дня. Мне необходимо привыкнуть к грунтовому покрытию. Мне нужно быть на 100% готовым как морально, так и физически. Очень важно хорошо сыграть в Монте-Карло, Барселоне, Риме и, возможно, Мадриде. Я очень рад вернуться на грунтовые корты. Очень хочется поскорее начать тренировки и сыграть первые матчи.

RFET picks Marbella as Davis venue

Spain Tennis Federation (RFET) will propose Marbella as venue for Davis Cup tie between Spain and Germany to be held on July 10-12.
According to what sources from the organization told EFE, the announcement may be made in Zamora, where the RFET new board intend to hold its first meeting with new president Jose Luis Escanuela.

Marbella (Malaga) was one of the three cities which offered to host Davis Cup; the other ones were Zaragoza and El Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz); Gijon, Tenerife and Cala Rajada (Mallorca) dropped candidacy.

Marbella, which count on the support of the Andalusia Tennis Federation (FAT), Malaga council and Marbella Tourism Center, suggested Plaza de Toros in Puertos Banus as Davis Cup arena.

Rafael Nadal could skip Madrid to boost French Open defence

The words “Madrid maybe” should have resonated through the tennis world last night. They were spoken by Rafael Nadal after his defeat in the quarter-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday and gave rise to concerns that the Wimbledon champion has not yet committed to the tournament next month that has changed the sport’s landscape.

There is no doubt that the world No 1 will play in the two Masters 1000 events in Monte Carlo — starting on Monday week — and Rome, in between which he will return to Barcelona, where he is a four-times champion and has lost once in 22 matches. It is the newly repositioned Mutua Madrileña Masters in the Spanish capital, staged for the first time on clay at the Caja Mágica — with three arenas, each of which fold into one — that is holding its breath as to Nadal’s participation.

Though he will not say so publicly, the 22-year-old is worried that a tournament staged at 650 metres above sea level does not offer the most suitable preparation for his fourth defence of the French Open, which begins in Paris six days later.

There will be delicate negotiations in the next few weeks with Nadal’s management, torn between the desire to support an event in his native country, and whether it will impact negatively on their client’s grand-slam prospects.
Each player in the top 30 on the ATP World Tour is mandated to play the four grand-slam tournaments, eight Masters events and four of the 500-point events, one of which has to be among those that fall after the US Open. Should it be decided that Madrid is not right, Nadal will stand to forfeit 50 per cent of the $2 million (about £1.35 million) bonus-pool money he would receive at the end of year if he were still ranked No 1 in the world.

It is a marvel that Nadal still commits to so much clay-court tennis anyway; he wants to play as much as he can, but not if the vibes do not feel right. He called his 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 defeat by Juan Martín Del Potro, of Argentina, here “an amazing disaster” and, in truth, it was one of his poorest performances for many a long day, and still he ought to have won.

“I played badly all the time here, I didn’t adapt well to this tournament this time,” Nadal said. “There is always a reason \ you are not playing at your level but it is personal.”

Таких видео, насколько мне известно, нет. На VB.com, где было переведено интервью, эту фразу тоже обсуждали. Газета L'Express достаточно респектабельна, чтобы печатать взятые из головы журналиста выдумки. Так что не доверять газете оснований нет. В принципе, такая фраза могла прозвучать, и Рафа вполне мог испытывать такие чувства (или до сих пор испытывает их). После того, как добиваешься чего-то невероятного для себя, да еще с таким трудом и на таких нервах, часто наступает чувство полного опустошения. К тому же вспомни эту ужасную церемонию награждения, выражение лица Рафы. Все эти переживания не могли рано или поздно не аукнуться.

Я не думаю, что Рафа намеренно будет проявлять сожаление, но определенный психологический подтекст вполне может быть.

Interview : Feliciano Lopez : «Rafa realises that Toni is doing an extraordinary job»

Putting the last hand on the next edition of the GrandChelem special « Tous coach » , we used 3 interviews our journalist Krystel Roche did for the previous edition but that were never published in full: Rafael Nadal by Feliciano Lopez, Grigor Dimitrov and Gilles Simon.
We begin with the first on that list.

Q : Feliciano, you and Rafa often tease each other on court ?
Feli: Yes, always…I tease him as well. We have known each other for so long, we constantly joke around. We know each other through and through and it’s always been like that. In general, the atmosphere among the Spanish players is excellent. Rafa is very funny, his uncle as well. They always try to pull pranks on everybody. Especially on me!

Q: You don't have a problem with that?
Feli : No, no !! No problem (smiles). Because it’s always done in good spirit, to have a laugh. It’s never nasty. I understand his jokes and he understands mine : we never do it to annoy each other.

Q: Today, it’s getting harder to make fun of him…
Feli: Now, I can no longer make fun of his game! (laughs) He’s the best player in the world so…I can only shut up! But what is certain is that when we do mock each other, it’s always done in good spirit. When I told him that he needed to improve his game or his serve or whatever, I really only said that to tease him. When we play together, we constantly tease each other and we take turn making fun of each other’s game.

Q : What impresses you the most in him ?
Feli: What impresses most people above all is his game. When I saw him the first time, quite frankly, I never thought that he was going to reach this level, that he would be this good. He has done everything to improve each year and, as you can see, each season. Rafa has gradually brought his game to a higher level. The first time I’ve seen him was in Barcelona. He must have been 12 or 13 years old and he was playing a tournament…for 14 year-olds. I watched his match for 5 minutes: it was enough to impress me because the way he fights. He was very aggressive on court, despite his young age. The second time was in Sevilla for a Challenger. We were training together and I was very amazed with the way he trains and the way he behaves on court. He wanted to win each point! After two or three shots, he tried to make a winning point…I was really surprised to see with what sort of authority he tried to that. (smiles)

Q: Did you think that he would one day be the world number one?
Feli: I knew that he was going to be a really, really good player. I had no doubt that he would one day be in the top ten. Each year, he improved and each year, he impressed me more. I think that this is the real key to his game: he improves every season. If you compare his game of 2005 when he won Roland Garros for the first time with his game now…sheesh…He’s a totally different player and he’s only 22 years old!

Q: Do you think that he will continue to improve?
Feli: Yes, of course. He has so many years ahead of him and his margin of progression is enormous. And Rafa is deeply convinced that he needs to improve. Each year, it’s more difficult, the pressure increases each year. Now that he’s the number one, everybody wants to beat hm. So, this leaves him without any doubt whatsoever: he really wants to improve his game.

Q : Is his upbringing one of the secrets of his success ?
Feli, Yes! Since he started playing tennis, he knew that he needed to stay humble and work hard to stay on top and I think that he managed to do so. It’s helped him a lot, that’s certain.

Q: Does he train more than the others?
Feli, He’s probably one of the players who train the most. In the end, no matter if it’s a match or a training session, he always uses the same sort of concentration and the same sort of intensity.

Q: Is the fact that he lives on an island important?
Feli: I don’t think that the fact that he’s an islander is one of the secrets of his success. Everybody has a home. Of course, Rafa has always been supported by his close ones, his family, his friends. But…after all, every player has that. Rafa is a guy who loves to return home whenever he can after a tournament. He’s deeply attached to his country, his island. He loves to fish and do all sorts of things there. Of course, returning to Mallorca regularly helps him. But it’s helpful to every player to go home in between two tournaments. No more, no less.

Q: What is the position of his uncle Toni?
Feli: In my opinion, Toni is quite simply the ideal person for Rafa. He takes care of him since forever and his influence is undeniably very important. Since he was very small, Rafa has always spend his days with him. They have so many things in common. Rafa’s behaviour on court, his state of mind, his way of staying positive: this is in part the result of Toni’s work. It’s his uncle and it’s not always easy to work with a member of your family. But I think that they have a great relationship and Rafa is aware of the fact that Toni is doing an extraordinary job for him. His uncle is somebody who has been very close in his career.

Q: Is being a lefty an advantage?
Feli : No, I don’t think it’s an advantage. There are several of us on tour (maybe 7 or 8 lefthanders in the top 100), the majority of players are righthanded. It does perhaps explain that it complicates things for them to play against one of us, quite simply because they’re not used to it but it’s just a matter of getting used to it, nothing more.

Q: What do you think about his rivalry with Federer?
Feli: The rivalry between Rafa and Roger is very good for a sport like tennis. But I think that Rafa would have improved, even without Roger. It’s part of his state of mind: to look for improvements, again and again, always, no matter who the opponent is.

Кажется, что сезон-2009 начался совсем недавно, а уже можно подводить итоги его первой четверти. Сильнейшие теннисисты планеты убедительно доказали, что они действительно сильнейшие и по праву входят в топ-20. На счету этих парней 19 из 20 разыгранных титулов в нынешнем сезоне. Но и среди них выделяются Рафаэль Надаль и Энди Маррей. Надаль выиграл Australian Open и "Мастерс" в Индиан-Уэллсе, победив в финале Маррея – 6:1, 6:2. Шотландец выиграл три турнира, в том числе в Роттердаме, где переиграл в финале испанца – 6:3, 4:6, 6:0.


Можно не сомневаться, что к концу сезона оба окажутся в первой восьмёрке рейтинга АТР и с 23 по 29 ноября примут участие в заключительном турнире года, который пройдёт на этот раз в Лондоне. Только после него мы узнаем имя лучшего теннисиста мира 2009 года. Пока главным претендентом на это звание является Рафаэль Надаль, продолжающий возглавлять мировой рейтинг с большим отрывом.

На прошлой неделе Рафа в четвертьфинале Майами вёл 3:0 в решающем сете, но в итоге проиграл аргентинцу Хуану-Мартину дель Потро на тай-брейке. 22-летний теннисный принц с острова Майорка свой следующий турнир сыграет с 12 по 19 апреля в Монте-Карло. Но его популярность сейчас очень высока, даже когда он не играет. Французская газета L'Express опубликовала интервью с первой ракеткой мира, раскрывающее новые грани неординарного испанца. С одной стороны, молодой атлет продолжает громить своих соперников с помощью мощного топ-спина. С другой стороны, обаятельный Рафа, по мнению утончённых французов, может служить моделью обезоруживающей простоты.

Возможно, именно сочетание этих качеств испанца инициировало начало новой рекламной кампании парфюмерной фирмы, которая сделала Рафу музой своего нового аромата под названием Lanvin L’Homme Sport.

– Где бы вы хотели оказаться на празднике?
– Мой остров – Майорка. Здесь я вырос. Мои предки поселились в этих краях в 14-м веке! Я до сих пор живу там со своей семьёй в том же самом доме, где и родился. – Моя мощь. Мне не всегда удаётся держать всю свою мощь под контролем. Моя бабушка смотрит по телевидению все мои матчи со своими 80-летними подругами. Одна из них сказала бабушке: "Он использует массу энергии в своих ударах, но делает это очень великодушным способом".

– Какие предпочтения в музыке?
– Мне нравятся испанские поп-группы вроде "Ла Ореха де Ван Гог", такие певцы, как Алехандро Санс и Хулио Иглесиас. Перед каждым матчем я стараюсь изолировать себя от внешнего мира с помощью своего Ipod’а. Это стало уже своеобразным ритуалом – перед началом игры мне необходимо немного послушать мюзикл "Призрак оперы".

– Любимая книга?
– "Город чудовищ" Исабель Альенде. Я очень тронут великодушием этого автора. После того как время Пиночета прошло, она вернулась в Чили и стала бороться за права своего народа.

– Опишите пейзаж, который заставляет вас мечтать.
– Когда мне было четыре года, мой отец разрешил мне залезть в рыбацкую лодку, и мы переплыли на другую сторону острова. Вид на землю с моря – нет ничего прекраснее! Когда я уйду из тенниса, то куплю лодку, чтобы провести на ней остаток своих дней. Но эта лодка должна быть оснащена двигателем, потому что я люблю скорость.

– Встреча, на которую вы рассчитываете.
– Роджер Федерер. Когда я был маленьким, то у меня была мечта. Я стоял у подножия этой огромной горы и смотрел на вершину. Когда в январе я выиграл у Федерера в Мельбурне, на Australian Open, то пережил какую-то животную радость. Но вскоре после этого я почувствовал опустошённость и неописуемое одиночество, как если бы у меня больше не осталось никакой цели. Для меня Федерер останется номером один в мире. Я хочу встретиться с ним вновь на корте. И я знаю, что он может у меня выиграть.

– Картина.
– Я стал страстным поклонником Рикара Чана, художника с Майорки. Он рисует очень странные картины, тёмные и серебряные краски изображают леса, распятия и каравеллы.

– Бунт.
– Успех не изменит мою жизнь. У меня осталась та же комната, те же друзья, которых я встретил в школе, моя девушка – подруга моей сестры. Праздники в Монако или в Сен-Барт меня не интересуют.

– Одежда, в которой выглядите лучше.
– Я не следую тенденциям моды, но, как все испанцы или итальянцы, я люблю выбирать одежду, которую собираюсь носить. Моя любимая одежда – это джинсы, белая рубашка, куртка, сшитая на заказ, и сантьяги (сапоги с острым носком и скошенным каблуком. – Прим. перев.).

Спасибо за интервью Фели - такая душка, я бы тоже к нему в объятия кидалась, как и Рафа Впрочем, и к Рафе бы в объятия кидалась, как и Фели
Одна из деук с VB.com вспоминает, как пару лет назад Рафа и Фели играли пару в IW. Одна из подач Рафы (хорошо, что он не Карлович ) попала Фели в голову, Фели закачался, упал... и лежит! Рафа ужасно испугался и подбежал к нему, а Фели тут же вскочил. Стадион хохотал, но больше всего хохотали эти двое . Хотя Фели потом всё время потирал голову - видимо, всё-таки было больно.
