HAVING been spared the perceived dangers of a Davis Cup tie in Chennai during India's election period, Lleyton Hewitt now finds himself at the mercy of the parochial European tournament directors, who will effectively determine his French Open lead-up schedule.

Hewitt's program had been in limbo while Australia's cup fate was being decided, with his commitment to the ill-fated Asia/Oceania zone tie and a deflated world ranking of 53rd conspiring to limit the claycourt options of the former No. 1.

Ideally, the 28-year-old would be playing the Rome Masters this week, Munich next week and then the new, whizz-bang Madrid Masters. So far, with yesterday's news of a wildcard invitation into Munich — facilitated by local hero Tommy Haas' shuffle up the entry list and into the main draw on merit — Hewitt is batting one from three.

Oddly, a Madrid fan poll may help to determine the wildcard chances in the Spanish capital of a player who has never courted the popular vote. No decision is expected until next week.

"We would hope that, being a former world No. 1, he might be a chance in Madrid, but you just don't know what they're going to do, that's the thing," Hewitt's manager, David Drysdale, said yesterday.

"We thought he might be a chance in Rome as well, but they gave the wildcards to four Italians.

"It happens in most places, they tend to look after their own, but we know in Madrid that (Spaniard) Juan Carlos Ferrero's got one and apparently (Croatian) Ivan Ljubicic's got one as well.

"We think that might be because (Ion) Tiriac owns the tournament and we think Ljubicic's managed by Tiriac."

Despite trimming his ranking from triple-figures in February with the help of his first ATP title in more than two years in Houston last month, this is the first year Hewitt has not been able to simply slot into the main draw of his choosing. Instead, he must rely on tournament organisers' goodwill.

"It's obviously not a position that he wants to be in, but we're hoping that it'll only be for this small period, for these few months, and then, by the end of the year, everything will be good, and he'll be up a lot higher in the rankings," Drysdale said.

"Munich were chasing us for him to play there a while ago and we said no because of Davis Cup, so it's worked out well that he's playing Munich because he's going to be on the clay, which is probably better than playing on hardcourt in Davis Cup anyway.

"It's just frustrating that with Madrid and Rome that his ranking wasn't high enough to get into those directly. But we're not too worried about it — he's got the French, he's got Queen's, he's got Wimbledon, and then after that it's a free hit, more or less, because he's not defending anything, and we've got a fairly full schedule for him in the second half of the year. Not that we're ruling out the French or Wimbledon or anything; it's just that it's all-up from after Wimbledon."

A secondary upside is that nor does Hewitt have any points to defend between now and the May 25 grand slam at Roland Garros, where he led fifth seed David Ferrer by two sets to one in the third round last year before losing in five, having not played for the previous six weeks due to a hip injury.

Hewitt Clinches 500th Match Win
atptennis.com

Former two-time ATP World Tour Champion Lleyton Hewitt clinched his 500th tour-level singles match win in dramatic fashion as he saved two match points before prevailing 6-2, 6-7(2), 7-6(7) against German Philipp Petzschner on Tuesday at the BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich.

“I think there are only two other active players have won that many,” said the 28-year-old Hewitt about reaching the 500 wins milestone. “That obviously means I’m getting old. I’ve been around for a long time. It’s something I guess you retire and you look back on it and realise you’ve had a pretty good career. It’s nice to bring up those milestones and be among those caliber of players as well.”

Hewitt’s 500 match wins include two Grand Slam titles at the 2001 US Open (d. Sampras) and 2002 Wimbledon (d. Nalbandian) and back-to-back Tennis Masters Cup titles in 2001 (d. Grosjean) and ’02 (d. Ferrero).

He finished as the youngest ATP World Tour Champion in 2001 at 20 years and eight months of age, overtaking Gustavo Kuerten who had come into the circuit finale in Sydney with a 48-point lead in the Rankings. In 2002, he became only the fourth player to rank No. 1 for every week during the season.

The Australian, who is making his debut at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament, looked set for a comfortable victory as he held two match points when serving for victory at 6-2, 5-4, 40/15. However, the 70th-ranked Petzschner hit back to level at 5-5 before taking the tie-break to even the match at one-set all.

The 28-year-old Hewitt looked to have regained control when he opened up a 4-2 lead in the deciding set, but was once again pegged back as the tenacious Petzschner levelled at 4-4. Hewitt held two more match points when Petzschner trailed 4-5, 15/40 and a fifth at advantage later in the same game, but the Adelaide resident failed to convert and was nearly made to pay the price as Petzschner earned two match points at 6-5 and 7-6 in the tie-break. Hewitt denied the German the chance for victory though before sealing the win himself on his seventh opportunity at 9-8 after two hours and 36 minutes.

“I was lucky to get out of there in the end,” said Hewitt. “I just kept hanging in there. Saved a few break points early in the third set and then he played a lot better when he was down in the match. He started going for his shots a lot more. He used his forehand a lot heavier and didn’t make as many easy mistakes. He gave me a lot early mistakes, especially in the first set.”

Hewitt continues to make his comeback from the left-hip surgery he underwent in August 2008. This season he has compiled a 14-9 match record, highlighted by winning his 27th tour-level title at Houston (d. Odesnik) last month.

Hewitt, a former Wimbledon and US Open champion, is still carrying the burden of being Australia's only world-class player and the country's sole representative in the top 100.

A stranger to weakness and excuses, the 28-year-old won his first title in two years in Houston in April, hopped on an overnight flight to Europe, landed in Monte Carlo and was playing again two hours later.

"I was always going to play. It's a big tournament," explained Hewitt, bewildered by questions over why he had still fulfilled his exhausting commitment.

Having made a career of manning barricades and refusing to whinge, Hewitt, now the proud father of two children, has not contemplated retirement.

Not even when having to undergo surgery on a hip injury last August which would have tempted lesser players to opt for the comfy armchair or the TV studio.

Instead, he's ready for a ninth French Open where he was a quarter-finalist in 2001 and 2004.

With Roger Federer's former coach - and 1966 French Open winner - Tony Roche in his corner, Hewitt still believes in his chances, even if he has come up short against Nadal in the fourth round in 2005 and 2006.

"In the last two and a half years, I've actually played some of my best tennis on clay," said Hewitt, who lost a five-setter last year to Spanish 'bulldozer' David Ferrer despite entering the tournament without having played a single match on clay for the season.

"I keep saying we don't grow up on it in Australia, so it's hard for any of us to come out and play well against the Spaniards and the South American guys straight up.

"But I've been able to learn and adapt to the best way for me to play. I think I can knock good players off on clay. I feel comfortable playing at Roland Garros."

Herald Sun.

TENNIS.com.

Roland Garros 2009: "David" Lleyton Hewitt Topples "Golaith" Karlovic In a Fiver

Wow! What a thriller, though it turned kind of anti-climactic in the end. Anti-climactic because, I was half expecting the match to extend, till perhaps a 14-12 or a 12-10 in the ultimate fifth.

So much for me and my wild expectations!

But then I am not disappointed, for climactic or anti-climactic; the player who I rooted for ultimately won! Phew...it was a relief to see Hewitt win given the way Dr. Ivo was playing.

55 aces...55! Bloody Hell!

Ivo shouldn't be a tennis player, No...No...he scares the hell out of everyone, not to mention the feeling of boredom one gets while watching the "Rally-Lustre-Less" points and games.

It's an altogether different thing following it in the "Best-of-Three-Set" ATP events, but at the slams it's a freaking nightmare watching and probably anticipating [in heart-of-hearts] that this match could vie for the "Maximum Tie-Breaker Show" award.

And today's match, had Lleyton Hewitt not intervened in the nick of time, could have very well gone in that direction.

Thinking about the match now, I am wondering whether Hewitt has rubbed the Slam organisers the wrong way? If it's not a personal vendetta, then why do they keep pitting him against opponents who are hell bent on giving him headaches?

First Gonzo at Oz this year and now Ivo at Roland Garros!

But seriously, Hewitt should be very happy with his performance today; at least his fans were with the way he turned on the game like a faucet recently fixed by an expert plumber to his advantage in the later stages.

The first two sets however, were a disaster to say the least. No break of serve, typical Ivo "ace-ing" his way around and Hewitt playing as if he was bored to be here, of all places!

On second thoughts, though after watching his performance in the next three sets, it looks as if he was just gauging his opponent and testing him, perhaps his mind working overtime as to, which part of Ivo's game, he could attack successfully.

And then at the opportune moment, he attacked like an eagle zooming on an unsuspecting hare in the third set tie-break winning it with two set points convincingly at 7-4.

That marked the beginning of the fall of 6'10 "Golaith" and the confidence boost that "David" deperately needed!

Thus, from the fourth set onwards where Karlovic was losing his sheen, Hewitt was gaining momentum and confidence with every pass and winner; Karlovic started banking on more and more on his serve, while Hewitt attacked and defended from almost every part of the court!

Karlovic: at his wit's end; Hewitt: yelling on the opposite side with pumped exhilaration of a "gift given" mollified kid- it was a sight to behold and the match, which was acting like a turn-off to most tennis aficionados, became interesting at the bat of an eyelid.

And, with two sets apiece, the action boiled down to the ultimate deciding fifth. Hewitt's record in a "Fifth Set Extended" match was in his favour 23-13; Karlovic, on the other hand had no such advantage and with his record standing at 0-10, the pendulum was statistically swinging in Hewitt's favour.

Hewitt in his turn, wasted no time and promptly broke Ivo in the third game of the fifth set. The whoop that he gave after winning it was like an involuntary shudder passing through and contagious at the same time.

And finally, after an "on-and- off inspiration" inspiring, agonisingly patient three hours and 56 minutes later, wrapped it up in the eighth game of the deciding set, when Karlovic hit a gunning shot from the far side of the court which ended up as an unforced error, giving him his deserved victory!

Now standing on the former World No. 1's way next is Kazakh youngster Andrei Golubev who after completing a whitewash of German Gremelmeyer in an easy straighter, looks a difficult opponent at the moment to a comparatively tired Hewitt.

R. NADAL/L. Hewitt

6‑1, 6‑3, 6‑1

An interview with:

LLEYTONHEWITT

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How frustrating was it for you?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, it was. It's tough against him. I thinkyou have to get off to a good start against him. He's such a good player, especially when he'sin front, as well, and he goes for his shots a lot more. Then he's dictating you the whole time behindthe baseline. It gets harder and harderfrom then.

Yeah, it would havebeen nice to have gotten off to a better set early in the first set and sort ofhung with him for a few games. Thatsaid, he's hitting the ball extremely clean out there at the moment.

It's really hard on that court with theheavy spins that he does hit to try and dictate a lot of the time and keep yourunforced errors down as well.

Q. What'syour thoughts on the game, in general? What do you want to improve maybe for the next month?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Going into the match, I felt like I washitting the ball fairly well. I probablytried to press a little bit too much against him today.

Yeah, he makes you dothat, as well, the way he hits the ball, and, you know, obviously his passingshots on the run and how strong he is out wide, as well.

Yeah, he sort of makes you come up and tryand play better, I guess, out there.

Q. Ifhe executes as well as he did today, I mean, which was probably close to hisbest even on clay, what can you really do? I mean, even if you get to that better start, it's still a long way...

LLEYTON HEWITT: No, it's absolutely hard. Yeah, he served pretty well out there today,as well. Normally I feel like he can getinto his service games a little bit better, even on clay. He was hitting his spots and he was mixing itup extremely well today.

Yeah, he wasn't justgoing for his, you know, slider that he uses a lot, and the left‑handslider. He hit a lot of aces down the Ton the ad court, as well. That'ssomething he's definitely added to his game.

Q. If you compare this match to the one you played with him in 2007 here atRoland Garros, is his topspin bouncing as high as it used to bounce, or is it adifferent, flatter shot than it used to be?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I think it's still pretty similar. I think from the baseline, when he's playingat his best, it's as good as it was back then.

Q. This was your tenth appearance here at Roland Garros. Do you expect to be back here next year?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, absolutely. Obviously I've been coming here a lot. It's been nice. I made a couple of quarterfinals here. It would be nice to have gotten a slightlybetter draw this year. Yeah, anyway...

Q. In the past you won four times against Nadal, and now the last fourmatches or five matches you lost to him. Do you see in the future a way to beat him, still?

LLEYTON HEWITT: I'm not sure. It's totally different playing him on clay to hardcourt and grass, Ithink. Yeah, he's obviously as good ashe's ever been right at the moment now.

He's No. 1 in theworld. His record on all surfaces, he'sholding three of the Grand Slams out of the four at the moment. He's obviously the form player on anysurface. It's going to be hard foreveryone to beat him week in and week out.

Q. If you look to this tournament you see some former No. 1 players likeSafin, Ferrero, you. You're not still inthe 30s, but it seems like your generation cannot pick on anymore. How do you see that?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Roger is doing all right for ourgeneration. We'll just hang on to him atthe moment.

Q. And about the rest?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Ah, it's hard to say. The three of us that you mentioned, they'veall had injuries in the last few years. Marat ‑‑ you know, we all know how talented Marat is and the way he canbounce back from injuries, and a bit of a form slump probably a year and a halfago and then made the semis at Wimbledon and knocked off Djokovic along theway.

Then last year Ferrerobeat Nadal on clay, I think.

I think we're still capable of doing it,maybe not week in and week out, but obviously it gets harder as you get olderwith the body as well.

Q. Whenyou were up 3‑2, you had a point where you had him wide to his forehand andthen a short forehand at the net. Youkind of hit it down the middle instead of really going for it. You smacked your racquet afterwards. That would have been a nice point to win, would have given you a bit more of a foothold in that second set?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I sort of got myself back into thesecond set. It was 3‑2 and I had Love‑30. He sort of missed a couple of first servesthere and given me a slight opportunity.

He hit two very goodfirsts and an ace and hit an unreturnable the second point to get back to 30‑All. The next two points I had chances, and Iwanted to try and dictate. I wasdictating, but I just didn't quite execute ‑‑ you know, the forehand I hiteasily could have hopefully have put it in the corner and put a bit of pressureon him coming to the net but I wasn't quite able to do that.

Q. We all play tennis and all wonder, why didn't you really clock that one?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Oh, I just didn't time it. I would have liked to have.

Q. What's your expectation for the rest of the season? You still believe you can reach a semi or aquarterfinal at a Grand Slam?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, absolutely. I think if you get the right draw and thingsopen up, obviously the next two Majors are two places I've played well in thepast. So a lot depends on the draw, andhopefully it can open up. On grass, Igive myself a good chance.

Q. Where your ranking is concerned, do you still believe you can reach thetop 20? You apparently need to play abit more than you are doing right now, I guess.

LLEYTON HEWITT: I have actually been playing quite a bit this year. I can't play much more than I have this year.

After hip surgery last year, I was forced not to play a lot of tournaments, and that was one thing I want to try and get back into the groove of playing a lot of matches.

Q. How are you doing right now physically?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Not too bad. I feel okay.

Q. You've done this many times, but four or five days from now when youfirst start hitting on grass again, what's that feel like every year when yougo from here to there and start hitting on the grass again?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Yeah, I always enjoy it. Grass is a unique surface. We only get to play on it three or four weeksof the year. Gotta be able to adaptstraightaway to it.

It's obviously a lotmore hit or miss than playing on clay. There's a lot of differences with it. You have to definitely go there and start working on the serve and thereturn. They are the two key shots onthe grass court.

Q. You have come back a long way now already after the injury and you havedefied a lot of critics who have said you were finished basically. You're coming back and proving more andmore. Was there a certain point whereyou thought, hey, it is really getting tough with all these factors that arenot going my way, or did you always keep positive?

LLEYTON HEWITT: Last year was a tough year because I hurt myhip earlier in the year and we couldn't exactly diagnose what was wrong with itfor quite a while. I wanted to get throughas many Grand Slams and Davis Cups as possible last year.

Last year wasfrustrating in terms of that. And thenwhen I had to bite the bullet and have the operation, then, yeah, I knew it wasgoing to take time to come back. Youdon't come back from a surgery like that straightaway and start playing yourbest tennis straightaway.

So I had to get matches under my belt, and Ifeel like so far this year, you know, the first half of this year I've playedsome really good matches.

A couple that, yeah, I would like tohave again. But, overall, I feel likeI've still been getting better and better every couple of weeks.
