Rafa-Nalbandian Late Night Redux
Nadal's Shifts Strategy in Classic Win

FROM THE BNP PARIBAS OPEN IN INDIAN WELLS – In the end, it looked nothing like the middle, which was almost the end of Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells. Then, David Nalbandian was having his way with the Spaniard, caning the ball with such force off both wings that he was one point away from going up two breaks in the second set.
But there are reasons why Nadal has won six Slams and the multi-talented Nalbandian is 0 for the majors: one is that Nadal never believes he's dead until he's put 6 feet under; two is that the Spaniard is much smarter than he's giving credit for and is able to change strategies in dire moments; and three is that as brilliant as Nalbandian can be, he doesn't really believe that his bombs will kiss the cornered at closing time.
The result was No. 1 Nadal fighting off five match points in a brilliant 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0 victory over Nalbandian in the 4th round in a match that ended past 2 a.m. on Thursday. Nadal ripped four winners on five of the match points against his friend in the 2 hour and 48 minute contest, who was by far the more impressive player until late in the second set.
Nalbandian came into the match with a 2-0 record against Nadal and for the most of the match, it was clear why: his two-handed backhand, which is his greatest weapon, invites Nadal's high-hopping forehands. The Argentine actually likes leaning into high balls and took a couple dozens of Nadal's left hooks and laced them either back down the line, or sharply crosscourt. When Nalbandian is feeling that good, he also cut loose on his forehand side and he did some major damage to Nada's backhand with deep missile shots. He was also clicking in on his serve, and moving it around with precision. He had Nadal, who was actually attempting to play forcefully, confused at to why his forays weren't more penetrating.
"I didn't go to the match with clear idea how to play the match," Nadal said. "So I go in the match, and I didn't have exactly the tactic or the things I had to do to win this match, no? Probably because I lost very easy in the last two matches against him, and I didn't know exactly think play. So I'm not happy about myself about that. Anyway, if I lost the last two matches, I didn't play well and he did, and I go on court and try to play my game. Play aggressive and hard, and later he play better and beat me. But I have to play, no? I didn't play with that rhythm and with that aggressively in the beginning and he killed me, so I'm not happy about that."
So Nadal dared himself to leave his comfort zone and although it was a bit painful watching him force his hand, he's so incredibly confident that he was able to put aside his normal serving routine and aim more toward the Nalbandian forehand. He also pushed that way more in rallies, especially with some heavy forehands down the line. He also decided that when he was going to go at Nalbandian backhand, he wasn't going to just heavily topspin balls, but put some meat on it. Off the backhand side, he mixed in a few slices, too, which sometimes took the Argentine a bit out of his rhythm.
Once Nalbandian realized that Nadal would be able to execute hard shots to his right and could not longer lay in the bushes waiting for chances to lace backhands, he was not longer as light footed and when he was guessing, he was nowhere near as accurate. And then came the money points, where Nadal declared that he was willing to take big risks first, and Nalbandian got a case of sweaty palms. Even though his level had been much higher for a solid 90 percent of the match, Nalbandian knows his video game playing buddy very well, and was aware that Rafa was putting up a fortress that he might not be able to climb over. After losing the tiebreaker, he drowned himself in the moat.
"I think today was lucky," said Nadal, who will face Juan Martin Del Potro "I'm not very happy about myself and the first two sets. I think I had from the memory, a lot the last two matches. He played well, yes, but I was a little bit scared about his backhand. So I didn't go to the match with the best mentality. But important thing is that I won. I'm quarterfinals, so I'm very happy for that. I'm happy with the reaction. I played very well the match points, and I played better the tiebreak. In the third set he was tired, I think. But I played better." |

Натали_из_Лондона бульбой не хочу!  надеюсь, что тебе удастся хоть немножко посмотреть, может, лайвстрим. важно еще, чтоб "предмет" совсем уж от тенниса не отлынивал. в Майами он отсеялся в самую сильную четверть, ИМХО. в 1/16 светит Гаске, 1/8 - Энди М., 1/4 - Гонсалес или Вердаско.

Nalbandian pulled out of the Barcelona Open due to a right hip injury. The seventh-seeded Argentine was set to play World No. 1 Nadal in Friday's quarterfinals. Tournament doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro said Nalbandian was suffering from inflammation of his right hip. It is not known if the injury will sideline Nalbandian beyond the Barcelona event.

The seventh-seeded Nalbandian was efficient in converting all four of his break-point chances in completing a 63-minute victory to reach the quarterfinals for the third time.
The 27-year-old Nalbandian raised his record to 14-6. The 15th-ranked Argentine has beaten Nadal in two of their three meetings — all coming on hard court — and nearly swept the top-seed in straight sets at Indian Wells last month, but Nadal battled back with a fury.
Nadal fought off five match points in the second set to subdue Nalbandian then wore out the 14th-seeded Argentine in the final set to score a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0 victory in the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals at Indian Wells. The two hour, 48-minute battle ended at about 2 a.m. local time.
"I (was) lucky," Nadal said after the match. "I start with some doubts because of last two times."
Nadal crushed four winners to save four match points on his serve in the ninth game then staved off another match point on Nalbandian's serve in the 10th game. |

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — David Nalbandian may need surgery on his right hip and could miss Argentina's Davis Cup quarterfinal against the Czech Republic in July.
Nalbandian withdrew from the Barcelona Open earlier this week, complaining of hip pain.
His physician in Europe, Angel Cotorro, told the Argentine newspaper Clarin that Nalbandian would receive three or four days of treatment including physical therapy and medication before a decision is made on surgery.
Argentina lost the Davis Cup final last year to Spain and is among the favorites to reach the final again with a team lead by world No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro and the 15th-ranked Nalbandian.
Argentina faces the Czech Republic from July 10-12 in Ostrava.

Former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian's season is under threat because of a hip injury.
The 27-year-old Argentine was forced to withdraw from the Barcelona Open earlier this week with the complaint.
His physician in Europe has since confirmed the world number 15 will undergo three or four days of treatment before a decision is made on surgery.
Should he require the operation on his right hip then he will be a doubt for Argentina's Davis Cup quarter-final against the Czech Republic in July.
The South Americans lost the Davis Cup final last year to Spain and are among the favourites to reach the final again with a team lead by Juan Martin del Potro and Nalbandian.
But the loss of the 2002 Wimbledon runner-up would represent a major blow to hopes for the July 10-12 tie in Ostrava.

Осень
Травма бедра у Давида, есть вероятность что придется делать операцию, могу судить по Хью в прошлом году востановится что бы снова можна было играть нужно 3-4 месяца, а полное востановление от этой ужасно не приятной травмы 9-12 месяцев, ну может обойдется и просто надо дать ноге покой посмотрим что скажет сам Давид
