Verdasco, Robredo Move On In Madrid By Tennis Week Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Juan Carlos Ferrero once provided a clay-court tutorial to younger Spanish players, but Fernando Verdasco home schooled Ferrero today.
Verdasco learned to play tennis in Madrid on a hard court in the family backyard. Today, Verdasco returned to his hometown and showed his clay-court skills in taking down a former French Open champion.
In an all-Spanish opening-round match, Verdasco had too much firepower for Ferrero in overpowering the 2003 Roland Garros champion, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Madrid Masters.
Verdasco delivered more than twice as many winners as Ferrero, cracking 24 winners compared to 10 for the lighter-hitting former World No. 1.
Earlier in the day, 16th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated Mardy Fish, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 in two hours, 14 minutes. Robredo raised his record to 28-9 overall, including 21-5 on clay in taking a 4-3 advantage over Fish in their head-to-head series.
"It was very hard work, but I think I deserve that victory," said Robredo. "It was very complicated to answer his serves. The first and second set he played very well and we had to fight it out to see who could make it in the third."
Robredo opened the tournament on Sunday with a 3-6,6-2, 6-2 first round victory over German Nicolas Kiefer. He will face either fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who edged Simone Bolelli, 7-6(9), 6-4, for a quarterfinal spot.
"When you can play at home, in Spain against someone like Murray and hopefully the public will be in my favour then that will be a great experience," said Robredo of a Murray match up.
Fish fought back from deficits of 0-3 and 3-5 to force a second-set tiebreak and was within a few points of a straight-sets win, but Robredo relied on his forehand to take charge in the latter stages of the tie break. He cracked a crosscourt forehand winner to level the match, raising his tie break record to 9-0, while Fish dropped to 5-7 in tie breakers.
It wasn't a completely lost day for Fish, who partnered Juan Martin del Potro in doubles defeating David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro, 6-2, 6-3.
Verdasco dictated play for much of the day against Ferrero, who has lost a bit of the sting he had on his shots when he was World No. 1. The bigger-hitting Verdasco bullied Ferrero around the court on the big points.
Serving for the match, Verdasco ripped his fastest serve of the match for an ace and a 30-0 lead. Three points later, he hit a forehand winner to secure a spot in the second round against either 12th-seeded Spaniard Ferrer or Argentine wild card Juan Monaco.
Verdasco is 5-3 lifetime against Ferrer, including clay-court wins in their last two meetings at Monte Carlo last month and in Hamburg last May.
Monaco is 4-1 vs. Verdasco with three of his four wins coming on clay.

Isner, ex-champ Gaudio get French Open wild cards 5/15/2009 2:35:00 PM
PARIS (AP) -John Isner of the United States and former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio have received wild cards for the Grand Slam event.
Isner and Bernard Tomic of Australia have became wild cards as part of an agreement between the French, U.S. and Australian federations. The French Open begins on May 24.
American Lauren Embree and Australian Olivia Rogowska will join several French wild cards.
The 30-year-old Gaudio, ranked No. 395 after a series of injuries, has not won a title in four years. He captured the 2004 title at Roland Garros over Guillermo Coria.
It's the second year in a row that French Open organizers have given a wild card to a former champion. Last year, it was three-time winner Gustavo Kuerten.

Garcia-Lopez wins first ever ATP title
KITZBUHEL, Austria (AFP) — Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez won his first career ATP title as he took the Kitzbuhel claycourt tournament with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory over Frenchman Julien Benneteau here on Saturday.
After a titanic struggle that lasted three hours and 10 minutes the 25-year-old Garcia-Lopez, ranked 74 in the world, tasted his first tournament triumph over the right-handed Benneteau.
Benneteau finished on the losing side of the net in his third appearance in a final, as the Spaniard overcame the setback of losing the first set 6-3 when there were five breaks of serve.
Garcia-Lopez sharpened his game in the second set and Benneteau was forced to save two set points at 5-6, before falling apart in the tie-break which the Spaniard won comfortably 7-1.
The turning point of the match was in the seventh game of the final set when Garcia-Lopez capitalised on his 10th break point to go 4-3 up and he held serve the rest of the way to close out the match.
Benneteau suffered his third championship match defeat after losing at Lyon and Casablanca in 2008, while the two men have a slight chance of meeting again at the French Open which starts Sunday after both being drawn in the same side of the draw.
Garcia-Lopez takes on Italian Andreas Seppi in his first round tie, while the 27-year-old Benneteau has the daunting task of facing compatriot and ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
