F. VERDASCO/D. Ferrer 6-2, 6-1

An interview with: FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Very impressive win. Did you expect such an easy win?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Of course not. With David, you never expect a easy win, no? I woke up this morning so early and we play I woke up at 7:30, and we went to the court at 3:30 in the afternoon. So the expectations was, you know, hard today. It was a tough conditions. You know, is hard to prepare one match like this because you never know when you are going to play.
You know, at the beginning of the match, the first game and a half with 1 0 down and Love 30, I didn't play so good. I made mistakes. I was a little bit slow in my movements. But after the 2 2 in the first set when I break him, you know, I start to feel much better. I start to play so deep.
I think that was the key a little bit because he was not able to go into the court and to be aggressive like he likes to play.
So, you know, I think it is these kind of matches you have very good day and the other one have bad day. If not, is not normal, no, one victory 6 2, 6 1 against David, for example.

Q. The deep ball, is it something you work on?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No. You know, when you play, you try to play deep, but sometimes is not easy and you play short, or when you try to go deep, goes long. But there is some matches that you are with good feeling. You hit, and everything you hit is going deep, no?
Tennis is like this. But all sports are like this: some days you have good days and another one bad. Today I have a good day. I was feeling good in the court. You know, almost everything I was trying was in. So like this, is easy to play. Is hard to play when you don't have a good day.

Q. Do you feel like you're having those good days more and more?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, I don't know. I think that I won matches in Miami, for example. Against Feliciano, I didn't play so good and I didn't feel good, and I won. I think that matches, when you win them, you feel better, no, than when you play unbelievable or when you play so good and you win. Because if you play so good and you lose, then the things are bad, no? Normally when you play very good, normally you need to win. And important is when you play bad, win also, no?
So, you know, of course, I am trying to play good always, but is not possible always to play good.

Q. Your best surface, is it still clay or hard court? What would you say?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: When they ask me this question, I don't know how to answer. I feel good in all surface. I always say that, no? Also when I was 50 in the world, I was saying that I was feeling good in clay. When I have time to prepare and when I have confidence, I feel good in clay, I feel good in grass, I feel good in hard court. So, you know, I feel so lucky to feel good in all the surface, no?
But is the truth. I don't know. If I need to choose one, my favorite, the one I better feel, I don't know. When I get used to the court, I feel good in all.

Q. You must know that everybody is expecting you to play well here because of the results you had in the past. Do you feel like you have no pressure because last year you didn't do so well here, or do you feel pressure because people want you to win more matches?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, you know, they was asking me also this, about the pressure also after I won the Davis Cup in Argentina, if I would feel the pressure because I won the Davis Cup and a lot of people will watch me play after that. They also tell me after the Australia Open.
And here, you know, I feel the pressure, but the same like I was feeling before. You know, I just feel the pressure to go to play and to think about the matches and how is the match gonna be and everything, no? But when I'm in the court, I don't think that more people maybe is watching me or less people, no? I don't know.
Is one thing that I don't think about. I just think about what I need to do and try to keep playing good and try to win the most matches I can, is the most important for me.
You know, the pressure I think is not good, if you put a lot of pressure on yourself. This is what I'm trying to do. No because I don't have nothing to defeat [sic] here. Also is important for sure that I am winning matches. Indian Wells, Miami and here was three Masters Series. Last year I didn't do anything. In Indian Wells I won one match. But in Miami and here I lost first round. So I knew before these tournaments that it was a good opportunity for me to get points, no?
I don't think I'm gonna feel pressure in the week of Madrid because I need to defeat quarters from Hamburg last year, or Paris. Then after you can win or lose. But I don't think I will feel different that I'm feeling here.

Q. You are without a coach here. When you want advice...
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, you know, like everybody knows, I am in contact the same like in Australia. I was with Gil Reyes and Darren Cahill and Sven Groenefeld, and all the coaches from adidas. You know, I'm in contact every day speaking with them and speaking about with who I play, how I need to play and everything. I don't have a coach here, but I have a coach speaking with him, or them, every day, no?
I think also in the court, you know, every player is different, but in the court you cannot have this help from the coach so much because in the court the coach cannot speak about how you need to play or what you need to do because if not, they will tell you, Coaching.
Is for me more important to speak with my coach before the matches and what I need to do and what I think I need to do and evening. So I can do this also by the phone.
Of course, I would like to be here with Gil and with Darren, no? But is not possible. I also happy to have them anyway.

Q. So yesterday you phoned to Darren Cahill, Gil Reyes, Sven Groenefeld?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Yeah, with Sven I was texting on the phone, just texting. With Gil speaking. And with Darren, yesterday, no. But I'm almost speaking every day. I try to be in contact with him every day with them, no? Sometimes because of the change of time is not easy, no, to find the time to speak with everybody. But I try always to speak with everybody of them.

Fernando Verdasco (ESP) vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP) 6-3 | 6-2

Q: First contact you have had with the court in a game setting, do you feel the altitude?
A:
Well, I think everyone feels the altitude. The court seems to be fine compared to the practice courts. I think the fact that when it rained they covered it and it hasn´t suffered as much as the outdoor courts have. It was quite good actually, maybe there are a few bad bounces but any clay court will give you bad bounces. I felt good and with the altitude you feel that and so does everyone else but in general I felt good. The feelings have been positive and I am happy with how I felt playing.

Q: I think that this tournament wants to be not a Grand Slam, more than a Grand Slam. What positive things can you find in this tournament such as the player´s lounge, the dressing rooms; Is there anything that stands out here that hasn´t been see in any other tournament?
A:
Well something that I haven´t seen before is the pool table. I don´t think that there is anything else. But a Grand Slam, to begin with, has many more courts than this one does. This is a huge tournament and I think the Magic Box is incredible. I have tried the blue court that everyone is talking about and it was the first time that I tried it – I was training for about two hours and I liked it to be honest and I told Gerard as well that I liked and that I hope in the future we could play on blue courts and that Madrid could be known as the tournament that innovates with this. There are some players that don´t like it and others do, I have heard a bit of both. Things about the tournament, well it´s clear that this is the first year that it is being held in these new facilities and obviously it´s complicated to have everything just right. They have just completed construction of the facilities a few days ago and obviously they haven’t had the opportunity to have everything the way they would like it. I think that they would rather have larger dressing rooms; they would like to improve things. When the tournament was held the first year in the Casa de Campo, there were many things that the players complained about and year after year they improved it and I think that the fifth year was the best indoor we had in the world. So I believe that we have to be patient because the installation is fantastic, it is incredible and we have to look at it for the future. There is a plan for the future to perfect everything and we shouldn´t really highlight the problems. On the contrary, we should be proud of what they have done here in Madrid and we shouldn´t be as negative.

Q: When we talked to Nadal about his toughest rivals he included you with Federer and Djokovic. Do you think it is excessive to include you among them?
A:
I don´t know, he knows what he said. I feel proud that he would include me among his toughest rivals. What can I say, I mean I don´t know what he thinks but if he mentioned me there then for me it is an honour that the best player in the world and the best on clay would consider me a one of his toughest opponents

Q: Do you see yourself at the level of Federer, Rafa or Djokovic?
A:
Well, I feel good, I am confident and when I go out on the court I try to give it my best and I try to go out and win against anyone, whether it´s Murray or Ferderer or Djokovic or Nadal. Apart from Gonzalez and Stepanek, these are the only players that I have lost to this year and it is clear that those four players are a step above everyone else. I beat Murray in Australia and I was close to beating Rafa in Australia and I think that I could beat these players but it is clear that it is very difficult because they are tough.

Q: This is perhaps the most important stretch of the season, first Madrid then Roland Garros. What is your objective, in the short term here and in the long term, Roland Garros?
A:
My objective is to win every game that I go into. I try to win and I try to win as many games as possible. As far as my ranking etc., I try to do the best I can. I made the quarter-finals against Federer in Hamburg and Roland Garros. I was in an Asian final against Nadal and I hope to do it as good or better, much better, and get points. The important thing is not to lose points. With the new ranking system, getting to the last 16 in Roland Garros, well if I do the same again this year I would lose points so I have to make it to another round so with the new system of points it is important not to lose points because there are lots of players that lose points with this new system that is being used so I am going to try to improve day by day and continue what I am doing to give it my best and try to win every game I play.

Q: In any case you are defending points on clay but you are an all-round player. At the US Open you do well so you can get points during the rest of the season if you don´t get them on clay?
A:
Well I am going to try to get as many points as I can every week and finish the year as high up as I can. Up until this year a in Australia I reached the semi-finals and Wimbledon, twice I have been in the last 16 and last year I lost against Kunitsyn and was leading and after Australia which was the best that I have done in my career, well I think Wimbledon last year is right after that as far as my level of tennis, from my point of view. I think at Wimbledon I can play well. Last year I was very comfortable playing there and I hope that this year with a bit more confidence and being among the top ten, I can do it better than I did last year. The Grand Slams and the Masters 1000´s are a priority for me. It is important for me to do well there and all of these tournaments are important towards the end of the year in order to meet my objective to be among the eight best to be able to play the Masters in London. These are tournaments that are essential for me, to win all the games I possibly can.

Verdasco: "I can not commit so many mistakes if I want to beat Nadal"

"I began to throw with less force and to play shorter. He had also been more fallón to that moment and from then he has begun to function the right, he has opened the court and he has managed to recover me the two breaks. On clay it is difficult to do points on serve and against Nadal more. On clay the breaks are done more and if this situation have been given on hard court it have hurt me more", he summarized. "Against Rafa you have to play more aggressive because a rhythm he imposes you than the others. At times I have sought the 'winners' too fast. When I play against him I should concentrate more and not to do so many errors. Here and in Rome, the worst and the best things I did it. It is certain that always I have lost against him, but the three matches of this year I have been close. In Rome and in Madrid I have had my options. I have to continue improving and little by little to go approaching him. Frustration? Always it bother you to lose with the same player, but what give me are desires to improve and to be able to win him some day", indicated.

Caroline Wozniacki Invited to Fernando Verdasco's Family Dinner

In her blog, Caroline Wozniacki wrote about being invited to dinner by Fernando Verdasco and his family in Madrid this week.

According to Wozniacki, it was a typical Spanish restaurant with a flamenco dance performance on stage while enjoying the food.

Wozniacki praised the fantastic food and the great entertainment that night.

She then revealed that name of the restaurant was Cafe the Chinitas, which was situated on a street called Torija at the heart of Madrid.

Looks like she really enjoyed the outing with Verdasco and his family that she didn't even mind mentioning about it in her blog.

The rumour between Fernando Verdasco and Caroline Wozniacki first sparked off at Indian Wells earlier this year.

Elmundo.
http://www.elmundo.es/encuentros/invitados/2009/05/3658/index.html

F. VERDASCO/F. Serra

6-2, 6-1,6-4

An interview with:

FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. (In Spanish.) It seems you felt really right on the court, but playingon Sunday, how do you feel about this?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
No, it's not too early, playing a Sunday, even though usually I play on a Monday or Tuesday. But I felt good, really, on the court, generally. Well, sometimes I felt betterduring the match with ups and downs, but more or less ‑‑ more or less, Ifelt good.

Really, what I was good at was myserve. I could hit back really well, andI can tell you that Serra plays really a tough game. He hits the ball, and you need to hit on hisbackhand. Otherwise, you know, he hitsthe ball deep, and it's very difficult to fight back.

Q. So you're No. 8. It's a good yearfor you. You've played many tournaments, and you were always reaching quarterfinals.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, this draw was a tough draw. The most difficult player will beAlmagro. We played quarterfinals lastyear, and he's going to do his best to fight back during the quarterfinals. And during the fourth round, Davydenko, forinstance, you know, the seeds. So it'sgoing to be a very tough draw for me.

But today, I want to think about thenext match. That's all. To win all these matches, the one after theother, and go as far as I can.

Now, I reached the 8th finals orround of 16, and I want to do this at least this year. And then I'll have to play against Rafa. It's going to be difficult, but I'll see if Ican play quarterfinals against Rafa. I'll take this.

Q. Now, in Australia, you reached the semifinals. You had manytough matches before you reached the semifinals. Is it very important for you to have, to winin three sets?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, it's very important to win in threesets for tournaments like the Australian tournament, but then, you know, if youlose a match, never mind if it's five sets or three sets.

What's important is to win the firstmatches in three sets only. And in Australia, I won the first three without losinga set, and that was really good when I played against Murray. I felt better than usual when I would reach the round of 16 during aGrand Slam.

But here, you know, I've justmanaged to win the battle in three sets, and I'll try and continue thisway. I'll try and win in threesets. I'll try and of course be thewinner of these matches, and not take or not use too much of my energy againstvery tough players like Rafa, Almagro, Davydenko and others.

It's going to be tough, but I wantto win. And if it's five sets, then it'sgoing to be five sets. But what'simportant is to win the first rounds and not to put too much effort intothis. And then to play well, for thefinal.

Q. Next match is going to be Wednesday for you. How are you going to get prepared? Because that's like beginning the tournament.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, yes, of course. It is complicated to play on a Sunday, because then you have two days off. Thatis to rest. And that's a bit somethingthat bothers me, you know, to wait for two days. Usually we play every single day or we haveonly one day of rest between two matches, but then this is the way it is.

Let's look at the positive sides ofthings. I'll have two days of rest torecover, to practice, and to be 100% ready for the second‑round match, and toplay as well as today or even better.

Q. Apart from Nadal, if I look at the upper part of the draw or the firsthalf of the draw, it's tougher than the bottom part or second half of thedraw. It would have been better for youto have the second half of the draw.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, I think that both parts of the draw aredifficult, because it's a Grand Slam. Ifit's not against Warinka or Davydenko or Nadal, well, they're going to have toplay against Djokovic or Federer or Berdych. They're tough players to play against.

There are many dangerous playershere. But, you know, Davydenko was hurt, injured, I mean, and he's gone down a little. He's No. 10. I've played againsta player who was top 4 or top 5. Nowhe's down to No. 10, as I said. So,Warinka is someone who had a very good season on clay, and usually they're moredifficult to play than Berdych or Gasquet or others.

But, you know, I didn't think aboutthe draw, really. That's the draw Ihave. I mean, that's all we've got.

Q. Sometime ago you said you wanted to win as many tournaments aspossible. Now, it seems that you'reconvinced that you can win. You can makeit. Now, according to you, do you thinkyou can win matches in this draw? Areyou still convinced or was it a major change for you?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, I didn't say that before. I thought differently. In the past I would say I could have a chanceto win, and now I would have all chances to win, no? But in the past I said, I'll do my best. I'll try and have the best scores and reachthe finals.

But this year I started with theAustralian Open and I started thinking I can win the Australian Open. That's the difference. I didn't say I would win the Australian Open, you know. When you play, the playersthat you have today, you can't be convinced you're going to win thetournament. This would be totallystupid, silly.

However, I started thinking I couldwin the tournament, and as far as Roland Garros is concerned, Rafa is really afavorite compared with Australia, because he's won Roland Garros for four years. But I'm convinced I can do something. I need to trust myself. Otherwisewho's going to trust me?

I'm the one to play on the courtwhen I start playing against Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, you know, the ones abovethe crowd and Federer, as well, if you I don't trust myself then I'm nevergoing to take this leap forward, I'm never going to improve and be in the top5, so you see, at this level, what is very important is to be convinced thatyou can make it and win. And then I'llsee if I can win or not.

Q. Well, let's assume you could play against Rafa. Do you think it's going to be tougher for youto win compared with what happened in Madrid? You know, there was the surface that wasdifferent, and the venue that was different.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, you see, for a Grand Slam, it'sdifferent. For the first round, untilthe quarterfinals, you don't really suffer. If you don't suffer too much, if you feel still physically good, it'sokay. But if, during the first roundhe's going to have longer matches, he's going to have more difficulties. Well, he shouldn't have any difficulties, because if you look at what he did in the past, it wasn't tough at all for him,to start with.

But as I said before, what'simportant for me is to play as many matches as I can in three and win them inthree sets, to reach quarterfinals against Rafa, possibly, and then to betotally fit physically.

Last year, you know, apart from thefact that, you know, I had my ankle problem in Hamburg, I was not practicing enough beforeRoland Garros, and I wanted to go to the round of 16 the year before, because Ihad not had any practice, and in theory, I couldn't play Roland Garros.

My doctor had said, had advised meagainst it. You know, Ventura in five sets, Chela in four sets, Iwas strong enough. But my strength hadgone down, and playing against Rafa was not possible. But now, if I can reach quarterfinals, I'lltry and be fit and have the best physical condition, because, you know, fivesets against him is going to be much more complicated than three sets.
It's always easier to surprise himif it's a set only, and just one set, if you think by that time, I mean, if youonly think you can win the match in three sets. But I have hopes I can win the match.

6-1, 6-2, 6-3

An interview with:

FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish.

Q. Good afternoon. You were focused during the entire match. It's as if you were on a mission here in Roland Garros. You're very much focused on your game.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, I think you need to be focused when you play here. You need to be focused when you play any Grand Slam tournament, and I try and be focused all the time.

So as I said, when I won the first round, this is a way you win matches. I also try and save my energy, so this is what I tried to do today. I wanted to win, obviously, but I also wanted to win as quickly as possible, not using too much energy so that I reached the other rounds in good shape, so that I can play 100% later on.

So I'm quite happy with the way I played today, and with the way I managed to win the match.

Q. Was the match as easy as the results show?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, the first set, except for the first game when he almost gave me that game, but afterwards he was very aggressive. Maybe too aggressive. Maybe more aggressive than he should havebeen, and that was very good for me, because I didn't waste much energy during the first two sets.

In the third set, he had a break with two shots on the line, and there was not much I could do in this game. I felt very comfortable, andI was in a particular shape and I knew I could reverse the situation and I couldwin a break game again.

So it was very good for me. You know, he played the match or tried to have the winning shots, and he was missing them, so that was good for me,because I didn't have to run too much.

Q. If you allow me to ask you a question, not about the match but about what you're going to do tonight. Are you going to watch the Champions League match?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Yes. Yes. We all meet together at the hotel. And trust me, I'd like the Barsa to win. I know you're not going to trustme, but I want the Barsa to win. Some people don't want Barcelona to win, but I do.

Of course, you all knowI come from Madrid, and Ferguson doesn't like us, so I'd like Barcelona to win this time. You can imagine what I think about Ferguson. He said many nasty things about Madrid, but I think he went too far. And let it be clear, we know what he said about Madrid. Even if people in Spain don't feel Spanish for me, the Barsa is Spanish, and I want them to win.

Q. On the tour, there are always players you respect a lot. Would you say that today people feel like that about you, that are respected because you only lost to very top ranking players? Do you think you're writing a page in the history of tennis?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, I don't know. I hope I am, but I don't know. I don't know what other players think about me. But to me, what's very important is that this year, this season, I only lost to González and Stepanek apart from the top four players, and I hope this is going to help me gain respect from the other players. Maybe I'll walk on the court with more self-respect or more respect from the other players with regards to my game.

But this is not really what's important to me. What's importantto me is to feel in good shape and to play well, and I think I achieved that right now. I play well, and I feel in good shape.

I get on the court. I'm pretty confident with what I'm capable of. I don't care what the other guy thinks about me. To be honest with you,I was not thinking about what the others thought about me so far.

Q. You're playing Almagro now. It's probably going to get more difficult.

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Yes, Almagro played quarterfinals here. He won the Acapulco tournament. We all know, and I know, that Almagro has great potential. He has a beautiful serve, and a beautiful forehand, so this match should be more difficult than the two first rounds.

I'll have to give more of myself, I'll need to fight more, and I'll need to raise the level of my game even more.

But, you know, each match is different, and being in good shape, as I said, allows me to play better and better, because obviously as you move forward, you play players at a high level.

Q. Could you tell us what your level is right now?

FERNANDO VERDASCO:
Well, Almagro is going to be my first really serious match. Playing Serra was also an important match for me, because he is French and he was very motivated playing here. And he also won quite a few matches and tournaments on clay, but I think Almagro is at a high level. And it's going to be difficult for me to win. I'll now rest as much as I can to be in the best possible condition, and I'll try and win that match.
