One Fernando Down, One To Go

World No. 2 Roger Federer fought off Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 on Wednesday in Indian Wells to book his place in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open.

He will next confront another Fernando, World No. 10 Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber to reach his first quarterfinal at a hard-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. Federer has a 2-0 record against Verdasco with both wins coming on clay at Hamburg.

“I'm looking forward to playing more baseline rallies against Verdasco,” said Federer. “I'm sure that's going to happen. It's a good thing that I'm still in the tournament and facing an opponent who actually is going to extend the rallies a little bit. It's going to be a nice match, I'm sure.”

The two players are making their first tournament appearance since the Australian Open, sidelined respectively by back and ankle injuries for the past month.

Verdasco, who achieved a Grand Slam-best semifinal finish in Melbourne with wins over Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, said about coming back from injury: “The first matches it was so important to see if I was feeling good off the ankle – winning or losing – just if I was okay, without pain and everything. So now that I won three matches already, I'm in quarterfinals. I did all the good things that I supposed to do. Now with Federer I will try to do a great match. I don't have anything to lose.”

F. VERDASCO/P. Kohlschreiber

An interview with:

FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How was your level compared to your match with Gasquet, would you say?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, I think with Gasquet it was different match also than today with Kohlschreiber. For sure in the beginning of the second set today I start serving you know, I think the serve at the beginning of the second set, it was with less power than with Gasquet, and than today also than in the first or the third set.
He started to put more pressure with the second serve and with the returns. Also I was, you know, not moving that fast at the beginning and I start to make more mistakes.
So he made the two breaks and then it was you know, I made one back, but, you know, he makes two breaks, it's almost impossible with this kind of players.
So I think that the level was good. In the third set again I was feeling pretty good. Like with Gasquet, he started to make more mistakes, also. On the first set I start good, and then the first game with my serve, I also made some mistakes and he played good.
But, you know, I think Kohlschreiber is a very dangerous player. He have very good games, then another games he made more mistakes. You need to be ready for all these good games, be prepared and to try to put all the balls in, no? Because he played so aggressive, and it's tough to play against him.

Q. You had a great tournament in Australia. Then you got hurt and had to take some time off. What were your expectations coming into this tournament?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, right now, I'm in quarterfinals. For me, it was so important, the first matches, after one month without playing a match, pulling out of Dubai and Davis Cup because of the injury in the middle Australia in my ankle.
So it was hard month for me, no? And the first matches it was so important to see myself, to see if I was feeling good of the ankle, winning or losing. Just if I was okay, without pain and everything.
So now that I won three matches already, I'm in quarterfinals, I will play normally with Federer, No. 2 in the world. I did all the good things that I supposed to do. Now with Federer I will try to do a great match. I don't have nothing to lose. He's No. 2 and I'm No. 10. I will try to enjoy, and I will try to win semifinals.
So my expectations already are so good to be in quarterfinals. Now I will try to do more.

Q. Do you have a different level of belief now when you go on court against someone like Federer where you say, Yes, I have the weapons to win this match?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Of course it's different. It's different mentality than months ago, no? Even one year ago, like four months ago it's different. I'm believing in myself much more against the top players than before.
The Australian Open helped me so much when I won against Murray and Tsonga, and then also the match I did with Rafa. All that made me feel that I can play and I can beat these players, no, top players.
So of course tomorrow I will try to, you know, to go outside and to the court and try to beat him. He is so good. Everybody know that. But, you know, if I have a good day and he don't have a good day I can win.

Q. It's the left ankle, isn't it?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Yes.

Q. How did you do it?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: With Murray. He made me one serve wide, and when I return, he just hit a forehand cross again. When I was recovering and trying to go to the backhand again, I twist my ankle. In that moment, I didn't know that it was that much, no? I just keep playing that match. I didn't feel so much in that match.
With Tsonga I felt pretty much that morning it was so hard for me, the warm up and everything, and also with Rafa.
After the tournament, I made an MRI, and they told me that I had a split in the perineal tendon. They told me to be eight weeks with a boot. You know, I said, like, Come on. No chance. Eight weeks? I need to pull out of Dubai and Davis Cup and also Indian Wells, Miami.
You know, I don't know. I was telling the doctor that my recovery normally is faster than the doctor says. So when he told me eight weeks, I said I will not put the boot. And I was just, you know, don't do anything, like play hard on court and just maybe hit some balls.
Just also see how is it feeling, and I was just doing that, no? Just doing things without pain and, you know, slowly taking the rhythm in the practice. You know, I think I made a good recovery.

Q. Did you have to adjust your game in your last two matches in Australia because of the injury?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, I was just enjoying that it was my first quarterfinals and my first semifinals in a Grand Slam. I was feeling so good, big confidence, and, you know, I was just playing my game and doing the things that I supposed to do.
But for sure with the ankle it was tough for me. I was holding the pain all the time. It was the balls, when they was playing hard to my forehand to recover, the precision on court was so tough for me.
So it was a few balls for me it was so difficult to defend. I was just trying to hit the winner, no, to don't recover and don't put my pressure on that ankle.
So of course I change a little bit, but that is normal, no? I was with a lot of pain. I was just trying to play the best I can with the pain I had.

Q. Since Australia, have you been in touch with Gil Reyes or with Andre?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I was a month in Las Vegas. All February I was practicing with both, with Gil and Andre and Darren Cahill, also. Also more players of adidas came. I was only two weeks alone there, but then after Wozniacki came and Sorana Crîstea came, and Mirza. So it was fun.
It was a great time with all the players there practicing. You know, it was a good spirit for me, also. One month there with Gil, practicing so hard, not doing all the things that I supposed to do or that I was doing in December in the pre season because I was in pain in the ankle.
But I was practicing so hard, and that makes me feel good also now again on the court.

Q. And if Andre said, Hey, I think I'm going to come back to the ATP tour, what do you think he would rank?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I don't know. But I was practicing with him a few days and he said that, no? He asked me, If I come back to the tour, do you think I will still be good player? I said, Of course you will be a good player. But ranking is tough to say one number.

Q. Did you play some practice sets with him? Did you have any results?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, we didn't play points. Just normal hitting and, you know, some exercise. No sets or something.

Q. But he's still got it?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Yeah.

Q. You talked in Australia about what Andre said to you in December. So when you came back to Las Vegas this time and he saw your great result, what are some of the things he had to say to you about that?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, first of all, he congratulate me and told me that I made a great job. He was so proud of all the game I made in Australia. We was talking about the matches and we was talking about things that, you know, he thinks that I need to change a little bit. Just talking about a little bit of everything, no? He's helping me a lot.
He have unbelievable relationship with Gil. They see each other a lot, and he came a lot of days to watch me also, and to support me. It was so good for me.

Q. Gil and Andre are so close, and Gil has had such an influence on Andre, do you think they sometimes think or talk in a somewhat similar way?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: They were together for twenty years, so of course they have unbelievable confidence. I think they're like family, no? So, so close.
You know, I'm just trying to enjoy this time with them. They treat me unbelievable, and I'm so happy to be part of the team, no?
I just hope to learn a lot from them, because they're unbelievable professionals. For sure they have a lot to teach me.

R. FEDERER/F. Verdasco

6 3, 7 6

An interview with:

FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. It didn't seem like you both played your best game at the same time. Seemed like one player would play very well and then fall back; then the other one would start playing well. Was that the same way it seemed to you?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: For me, you know, for my opinion, the match, it was a little bit irregular in either both, like you are saying, for both players. I think either, we didn't play our best tennis in any moment of the match.
I was, of course, few moments feeling better than in other ones. But in general, I didn't feel so good tonight, no? I don't think that he also played his best tennis. I think he served well. The serve today was a big key for him.
But also, in the beginning, he start making good shots with the forehand. But then also, in the second set, he didn't hit that much more than in the first set.
So I think that also me, in the first set, not so much and in the second set I started to hit a little more winners with the forehand and feel a little bit better.
But I think either both, we didn't feel our best tonight.

Q. So did you have the sense that in the second set, when his level started to go down, that this was just Federer losing concentration or did you think that you were putting more pressure on him?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, I think that I was playing a little bit better. I think that of course a little bit more pressure than in the beginning because I was playing better the second set than the first.
But I don't think that he just lose concentration, no. I just think that I play a little bit better. I play deeper to the backhand, and he started to make more mistakes.

Q. Was that something you tried to do, to loop the ball to his backhand more?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No. I was just trying to take my forehand all the time. But with him it's tough also, because, you know, if you don't take the forehand, he play deep. He play all the time, you know, inside the court. He didn't give you so much time, you know, to take forehand all the time the easy volley point.
Anyway, like I just say, I didn't feel so good today. The few times that I just had the chance to take it, I didn't take that chances, no?
When I was taking the forehand to move, I was taking the forehand sometimes and I was missing the first shot. So this is helping to break me in the first set, and also to break me back in the second set when I was serving for the set.

Q. From tournament to tournament, you're always in the limelight, the headlines. When you want to get away from it all and just get away, aside from your home, not your home, where do you like to go? What's your favorite place?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, I like to go in the States, no? I go always when I can to Miami. It's a city that I like so much.
And also now in Las Vegas. You know, I'm enjoying so much my time there with Gil and with Andre and all these guys there.
You know, I think that they're right now my two favorites cities after Madrid.

Q. Vegas and Miami, two fun loving places; would you agree?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Yeah, you can have a lot of fun in both cities, but in Las Vegas I didn't go out in one month. I was just practicing so hard. Every night I was so tired to go out.
And Miami, when I went out last time was three days in November for holidays. I went out one day because I was all day going around with friends with the boat and having fun with all my friends.
I'm also a person that doesn't I don't like so much to go at night, no? I prefer days than nights. It's true that both cities are so fun and so good with nightlife.

Q. Are you satisfied with this tournament overall?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, of course I want more, you know, than quarterfinals. But I also need to see that I was coming from injured, and it was also one tournament just to check and see how I feel after all these months without playing any match.
I prefer of course quarters than I think it can be worse than quarterfinals, no? So of course I want more, but I cannot be sad or mad with this result, no?

An interview with:
FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How has your life changed since you helped to win the Davis Cup and played this great match at the Australian Open? Has your life changed?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: A little bit. No, the truth is it changed a lot after Davis Cup and also the Australian Open. It was a big change for me. You know, to be of course in the top 10 for first time after Australia, it was one of my biggest goals.
I was so happy, you know, taking that goal, and also, you know, everything. Everything is much better than before, no? You know, when you make your work good and everybody come to you and say that you are making a great job, makes you feel happy and much better, no?

Q. Are you more popular in Spain now, like people approach you on the street everywhere?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I just been three days in Spain after Australia, because after that I went to Las Vegas for practice another month with Gil Reyes and all the team.
You know, I didn't have to much time to see about this, no? But it's one thing that also is not important for me, no? For me, the most important thing is to play good, to keep playing like this, and to win all the matches I can, no? I think that is important for me.
The other thing is if the people recognize me more or not, it's one thing that is not the most important thing right now.

Q. How did you think you played today?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: It was tough conditions. It's windy. And also, you never know, you know, because sometimes I was looking the palms to see where the wind was.
After one ball, I miss one ball long thinking that the wind was coming against me, and then the palms are looking the other way again. So it was changing a lot.
Like this is tough, no, to play? It's really tough. You make more mistakes than usual. But, you know, at least I won. It's important also to win not playing the best tennis, no?
But also, the other guy, for him it was also tough. It's tough for all the players to play like that. I'm happy that I, you know, took that challenge and I was able to win with these tough conditions.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about your decision to go to Vegas and work out with Andre and Gil and Darren and how that has helped you?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: A lot. I just spoke a lot about this. After Australia, after Indian Wells, during Indian Wells, that Gil Reyes, Darren Cahill, Andre Agassi, all the people that I was in Las Vegas practicing with helped me a lot. I was practicing so hard with Gil in December, also now in February.
But now in February it was a little bit different, because after Australia I was, with my injury in the ankle, I didn't practice that hard or all the things that I was practicing in December. It was a little bit different, but also very tough.
They help me a lot. You know, Agassi, like I said too many times already, was my idol when I was young. I was watching all the time his matches.
Now, you have your idol telling you what to do, you know, telling you what he thinks is better for you, what is not better for you, you know, helps you a lot.
I think that it's one of the best decision I ever had, to go to Vegas and to be with all these unbelievable persons helping me.

Q. Is this informal? Is it a paid thing? Like is Darren going to be your coach at all, or is it part-time?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, he just help. They don't want to travel so much. Darren Cahill was in Indian Wells, Darren and Gil. They're working for adidas also, for the program of adidas.
Not only me. You know, a lot of top players was there in February. You know, I was a player that I had been more time there, but I'm not the only one.
You know, it's just help of them, telling me the things I should do and the things I don't needed to or what they think about me. You know, there is a lot of help for me, because they had a lot of experience. That's so important, no? Help me a lot.

Q. Seems to be working. You're playing at a really intense level. Looks like you're on a mission. At 25 years old -- you're now in the top 10. What more do you hope to accomplish?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, I think that everybody is different. Now, for me, with 25 years old, it was my time to be top 10 for first time.
Another people, another persons with 18, another one with 23, you know, everybody is different. Everybody mature before another one later. For me, after Davis Cup, that was a big change for me mentally. That gave me a lot of confidence and motivation to be, you know, in the top and to try to be better.
All this motivation and confidence that I had in that tie and after that tie made me took the decision to go to Las Vegas, also, and to be out of home in Christmas, in New Year's without my family, just with my dad in Las Vegas.
It was really hard for me for one side because I'm so -- a person so familiar. I love to be with my family in Christmas and New Year's. All the last years I didn't play the first week of the year, because if I play these tournaments in Chennai or Adelaide or all these tournaments, I cannot be New Year's at home. That's, for me, pretty tough.
I think that last year was my time to take that decision and, you know, not to be with my family, but just do what I need to do, what I think that is better for me to be better.
You know, I'm happy that I start the season that good, playing that good. I hope to be playing like this the much time as possible.

Q. Is it important for to you continue to rise up through the rankings? Do you see yourself being No. 1?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No. 1 is far away right now. Rafa have a lot of points. The most important for me is to keep improving and, of course, keep going up in the ranking, no?
Right now I'm No. 9. No. 8 is like 100 points away from me. You know, I just need to go -- I don't like to think about too much, you know, or too far away. I just want to think day by day, to do the things right and try to win every match every day.
You know, all the things that need to come will come, so I don't want rush any way.

Q. Have they helped you mostly, Gil and Andre, with conditioning or technical things about your game? Seems like right now you could outlast anyone stamina-wise.
FERNANDO VERDASCO: They help me in both: physically and also technically and also telling me what I need to do, what I don't need to do against these guys. Do one thing against the other one. Do a little bit more or less or whatever. Every player is different.
You need to know how to play against one. And then another one is that they're completely different than the one before.
Yesterday I was speaking on the phone with Darren Cahill. I didn't reach Gil. But we are a lot in contact. In Indian Wells I was speaking also with Andre. So it's things that, you know, we are in contact a lot of time.
Next match I play with Feliciano, but with him maybe I don't need that much help because we know each other a lot. Many years he's my best friend on the tour. So it's going to be tough to play against him.
But against another players that I don't know that much or that I didn't see them play before so much, they help me a lot also, no? Darren, for example, he knows a lot of players and how they play and how I need to play against them.
Big help for me.

Q. Has it been tough following Rafa? I mean, you're older than him, obviously. Has it helped drive you to see what this kid has done so young and say, Hey, why not me?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: You know, he was so good always. The best in the world under 13, under 14, under 15. He's one of millions and millions, no?
You need to see him like a mirror, like professionally, and how he is day by day. For him, it doesn't matter to be No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3. He's giving 100% of himself. That's one thing that you need to learn from him.
But, you know, about me, I don't think that -- you know, I didn't think that he's younger than me, and if he does it, why I don't do it or whatever, no? I think that I need to do my things. Every player, like I told you before, is different.
You know, things like I just tell you, like he's so professional and how he made everything to be like this every day, this is one thing to learn from him. All the other things, everybody is different.

Q. As a left-handed player, how did you feel like to play against right-handers? Is it an advantage? You feel like that?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, I was playing -- normally you play 90% of the matches against right-handed, and for them, they played only 10 against lefties.
So I think there is a little bit for us advantage against them, no? Because they're not used to playing lefties, and they maybe need to change a little bit his way of play.
But then after, in the court, I don't think it's a very big difference. I think it's a little bit difference, but it's not a huge difference.

Q. When you were in Las Vegas you said that you worked on some spirituality. Describe a little bit about that.
FERNANDO VERDASCO: About what?

Q. Spirituality.
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No.

Q. Did I mishear?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No. It was just a great time speaking a lot with Gil. He's the one I spend more time, and he's -- you know, I think, like I said many times already, he's maybe the most professional coach or person I ever met.
He have everything under control, and he made me be more professional and also have everything under more control about foods, about everything, you know, like time of play or time of practice, everything.
We were speaking also that we was practicing so hard, four hours' fitness every day, 3:00 to 4:30 every day. It was also a lot of conversations and motivation and telling me, you know, like I just told him before, all the things that I should do or what I don't -- he don't think needed to, you know, just about everything. We were speaking about, I think, all what one tennis player needs.
And also, every player, like I told you also, they're different, so I think you need to find your own way the best way for yourself. So he was trying to do that.

World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco (pictured) defeated German qualifier Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4 earlier on Saturday to post his 200th tour-level victory.

The Spaniard, seeded eighth, was not at his best in his opening match but combated losing his own serve three times by converting five of eight break point opportunities on Becker’s serve to wrap up victory in 78 minutes on Stadium. The victory took Verdasco to a landmark 200-151 tour-level record.

Afterwards, Verdasco admitted the windy conditions had made the match more challenging: “It's really tough. You make more mistakes than usual. But at least I won. It's important also to win not playing the best tennis. I'm happy that I took that challenge and I was able to win with these tough conditions.”

The 25-year-old Verdasco has compiled a career-best 13-3 match record at the start of the 2009 season, highlighted by defeating World No. 4 Andy Murray and No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the Australian Open semifinals – where he lost to countryman and eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Last week he advanced to the quarterfinals at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells, where he succumbed to No. 2 Roger Federer. The Madrid native was also a Davis Cup hero for his country in December, when he defeated Jose Acasuso to win the coveted ITF men’s team competition for Spain.

Verdasco next will face countryman and sometime doubles partner Feliciano Lopez after the No. 32 seed fired 15 aces and broke serve three times to knock out American Sam Querrey 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2. Verdasco and Lopez have met four times previously, with the head-to-head split at 2-2. Verdasco won their most recent encounter at 2008 Sydney on hard court.

Юннат, однако

Так на пальмы засмотрелся, что забыл, какой гейм играет, и пошел на переход вместо того, чтобы подавать на матч. В результате с первого зраза на матч не подал наш юннат.

Verdasco survives Lopez at Sony Ericsson Open

Ricky Dimon

Fernando Verdasco drops the first set on Monday night but comes back to defeat good friend Feliciano Lopez in the third round of the Masters Series Miami.

Fernando Verdasco outlasted Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Monday night. Verdasco needed two hours and four minutes to set up a fourth-round showdown against Radek Stepanek.

As the heavy underdog against his fellow Spaniard and occasional doubles partner, Lopez came right out and made a statement that this match would be no cakewalk for his opponent. The No. 32 seed seized a quick break of serve and that was enough to win the first set, albeit just barely. Lopez fired seven aces and won 80 percent of his first-serve points, but still had to save five break points in order to consolidate his advantage.

Verdasco, however, got his game together in the second. The No. 8 seed used a quick break to storm ahead 3-0 and he never looked back. Verdasco was utterly dominant on serve in set two, putting in 80 percent of his first delivieries and dropping just four points in five service games.

Verdasco sustained the momentum by gaining the first break of the final set, but a loose service game immediately thereafter brought Lopez back on level terms at 2-2. Neither man cracked until Lopez clearly felt the pressure while serving at 4-4. Stellar play by Verdasco gave him a 0-30 lead and a Lopez double-fault resulted in three break points. Lopez saved the first two, but tossed in another excruciating double-fault for the break, all but throwing away the match. A routine service hold for Verdasco at 5-4 finished off the proceedings in anti-climatic fashion.

Verdasco and Stepanek will be meeting for the third time already this season. Stepanek won a three-set title match in Brisbane before Verdasco got revenge in the third round of the Australian Open in the form of a 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 blowout. Overall, Stepanek leads the head-to-head series 3-1.
